@crazydoglady: I found the book The Ins and Outs of Poop really helpful. The bees did a blog post on it years ago. It (and a few months time) seemed to be the difference between our 1st attempt at potty training (with up to 6 poop accidents a day) and our 2nd which was smooth sailing. The Play-Doh demo and reward chart for sitting on the potty and practicing pushing seemed to help the most.

FWIW - DS has been on Miralax since he was baby (1/4 tsp that we haven't been able to cut out).

Like @misolee: said, our son hides or starts running around to find a place to hide, and starts sticking out his butt / squatting. The OCPT book says that is very common . Once we realized the signs, we would yell, "poop time, poop time, you have to run to the potty" or something that that effect, and we'd all run to the potty - sometimes we had to grab him and run. After about a month of that, he figured it out and would initiate the run himself. We have grandparents babysitting him during the day so they were able to be more focused on noticing the signs, too.

He liked having a stool to prop up his feet and books to read in there. He also likes privacy.

My oldest was like this. She potty trained and night trained okay (at 2) but poop was another story.

Get one of those thick training underwear. It holds poop in better. I also drew a calendar and every time she didn’t poop in her underwear she got a sticker and when she did I drew a big X (haha) bc I was frustrated with all the poop cleaning.

But with her, I noticed she would run to the corner or behind a chair to strain to poop. Eventually I caught on and put her on the toilet during those times. She likes to use big one and I also put a small step so she can use it to push.

Thankfully, my middle child that just potty trained somehow figured out how to poop in potty. Fingers crossed that there are no regression but he’s been using potty for about 2 months and no poop accidents

My son is 3y7m, potty trained for pee but he just hates pooping in the potty. Generally he isnt' constipated - he just prefers to poop in his underwear or his overnight diaper (not night trained). He does OCCASIONALLY poop on the potty... like once a month. I figure he will get it eventually. In the meantime, I clean so much poopy underwear, it is so horrible :bummed:

Oh no! That sounds super frustrating. It’s likely an issue with constipation. I’d speak to your doctor but here I think they would suggest PEG (restoralax etc) to clear him out and also so that it’s really soft and he can’t hold it. Hope you figure something out soon!!

Fiber gummies weren’tt enough for us, my kid takes Miralax daily to keep him regular. He’s almost 4 and 44 lbs and takes 1 capful a day.

It took my older like 6mo to be good with poop. She also had constipation issues. Forajen4kids helped. But yah just give it time, fix the constiparion issues, and don’t make it a big deal

It took time for us, and when he gets constipated he still has some accidents. He is almost 7 and while they aren't full on accidents like when he was potty training he will get some pretty ugly skid marks because he tries to hold it when he obviously needs to go.

Our ped recommended these books, the first when he was first potty training and the second when we were having a lot of accidents because he was constipated.

When we potty trained DS2, he had a harder time with #2. He would often going #1 just fine but poop was another story. It just took time, honestly. We didn't get mad at him. We just let him know that poop goes in the potty and would take him there to sit on the potty after an accident so we could start the clean up process. It finally clicked for him at some point. I know this probably isn't that helpful as I know it's super frustrating while you're "in" it.

My 3.5 year old started pt at Christmas and, while he has his fair share of accidents, he is pretty good with making sure pee goes in the potty. Poop is a whole other story. It hasn't always been this bad, but every BM has been in his pants for the past three days. He will be playing and will tell us after the fact or we will smell it. This is sometimes just after going pee. TMI: The poop itself does seem pretty hard so we started him on fiber gummies. Please help!
