He’s still very picky- more snacking than the eating I prefer. He makes up for dinner and on the weekends.

@JJ2626: that's a solid choice when you have a good teacher who encourages good eating habits. I've often sent just a thermos of pasta/veg/meat/sauce and a side of fruit.

So our (very experienced) preschool teacher has a different approach and told us to pack one main, protein meal and then dessert (fruit). She thinks all the choices makes kids eat less. I was skeptical since it seems like bentos are so popular but it seems to work.

I agree with @MrsSRS.

My 3.5 year old sometimes eats one thing out of his lunch and that’s it. But then he makes up for it at dinner. If they are hungry they will eat.

I usually don’t even send a main course. I just do a small variety of things in a yumbox. A few things I know he will eat and things maybe he will eat.

@cake2017: I wouldn’t put hot things in it - when we sometimes send Mac and cheese we use a thermos instead - and I do send it in a lunchbag with a cold pack.

DS1 didn’t eat lunch at school until Kindergarten, but he struggled to eat much at first. His favorite bento style box was from Sistema and I got it at target. We did a snacky lunch: fruits veggies cheese deli meat crackers pretzels etc. I tried to change it up. He also doesn’t eat sandwiches. Yogurt is one of his favorites so I sent yogurt of some kind most days.

Remember that the calorie need at this age is not that big. If he won't eat the main dish just serve a tiny portion of the main thing. 2-4 tablespoons, or none, and just do more snacks things. Power bars cut into little bites, fruit leather, cheese and crackers, hummus and carrots, oat energy balls, sesame sticks.

@erinbaderin: I’m so stressed about it lol. He seems to snack. not eating much of the main course(pasta and nuggets) but the bar, crackers, veggies... from what he tells me lol. thank you.

Yumbox- can you send things hot and cold? need an ice pack?

Not exactly the same thing, because I have a four year old and he just started kindergarten, but we use a yumbox. He does eat sandwiches, so we do a mix of that and, like, cheese/crackers/meat, mini croissants, etc, with fruit, veggies, and a treat, plus two snacks. I honestly wouldn’t worry if food is coming home - if you’re providing a variety of things that you know he generally likes, just assume that he’s eating what he’s hungry for. Sometimes my four year old seems like he lives on air and popcorn.

Hi! I put different options and sometimes just a few things. Looking to go back to bento boxes. Any suggestions which to use and if they hold hot food? I am currently using a lunch box and thermos. Any suggestions to get him to eat more? He won’t do sandwiches. TIA
