Um, have you ever seen really little kids play soccer? Usually one or two kids have the ball most of the game and the rest of them chase after the kids with the ball, pretty much disregarding all rules. And then you always have a kid or two that stands around staring at the sky or picking their nose :silly: . Real soccer doesn't really happen until maybe the under 8 division.

@HabesBabe: @808love: That's what our soccer class sounds like for LO. It's for 2-3 years old. There's a lot of running, kicking the ball, stacking cones, playing tag even. He loves it. Our class has parental participation as part of it. It's truly herding cats. Among our friends, it's known as "herdball."

just kicking and running with the ball. It was more about the teamwork, listening, playing, character values and social aspects. It depends on the league though.

Our class was 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 year olds. They started at the beginning with basic exercises, kicking the ball from the center to different colored flags, then kicking the ball around obstacles, then kicking the ball into the goal. Not any real soccer play or rules, but just kicking and following instructions (oh, and doing "soccer stance.").

It was like herding cats.

If your 3 year old has been enrolled in soccer; can you share what they do? I think most 3 year old classes are still mainly play with a bit of instructions?

My almost 3 year old is really quite good at soccer. Unfortunately, we're not in a spot to sign her up for classes right now. So I thought if we had a net in the backyard DH can work with her over the spring / summer. This way hopefully we can sign her for the 4 year old class in the future and she'll be "ready"!
