I was 35 for pretty much all of my pregnancy and had it done. I had researched it ahead of time and asked my insurance if it was covered and they said yes. So at my genetic counseling appointment they recommended the NT scan and I asked about the MaterniT21 and she said that she would've recommended that too.

I insisted I get it earlier than the NT scan. NT scan was right at 12w, and I knew when I ovulated (because it was medicated) and I knew I could get the blood test at 10w. They tried to argue with me, but I got my way. And I was REALLY glad I did. At the NT scan the doctor had a hard time getting a read on the back of the neck and thought it looked enlarged, which I believe is a soft marker for downs? But she said since my MT21 results were great (1 in 40k for downs) she wasn't going to investigate it further.

If I hadn't had the blood work done first, I would've been going crazy with worry while waiting for the results. I think they like to make most people take it at 12w because then it's one visit with your NT scan, and also because you HAVE to be at least 10w, and most people are kind of fuzzy on when they ovulated.

On a side note, I don't really understand the mentality of not wanting to know anything. Is it better to be blindsided at birth that there's something wrong? We wouldn't have terminated unless we found out something that meant he'd live a short painful life, but if my kid had Downs I'd want to spend the next 6 months learning about it and being prepared.

@Anagram: I was actually 34 when I got pregnant but turned 35 2 weeks later! So we will see.

Thank you everyone for your responses!!! I will definitely get the test if offered! We will have to see, it sounds like many offices offer it. It's been 2.5 years since I was pregnant before and I was at a different hospital/practice, this test wasn't around yet, and I was 32.

I was 35 when pregnant with DS (turned 35 about 3 days after the supposed conception date). My doctor didn't bring this or any special testing up with me although I did ask if there was anything extra tests/concerns because of my age.

@Anagram: I was 36 when I got pregnant, but my understanding is that they go by age at delivery. Harmony only tested for a few things, 13, 18, 21, and sex chromosome disorders. I did also do a separate carrier screen that tested my carrier status on like 90-100 different disorders. I can't remember if Lynch syndrome was included, but you could ask the genetic counselor about it when you meet with them for the other test.

TO all of you--were you 35 when you got pregnant? I'm 34 now but will be 35 when I deliver...would that change things? I'm going to see my doctor this Tuesday so I can just ask, but just wondering what all of you experienced.

Also, other than Downs, what else do these tests look for? my family does have Lynch syndrome running through us, but I haven't even had the genetic test on myself, and I doubt these tests look for that. Does anyone know if they do?

My doctor wanted me to get it. My doctor's office uses Harmony. For some reason my insurance company didn't cover it, even though the doctor said it was necessary due to AMA. However, my doctor had told me beforehand that if my insurance rejected it for some reason, Harmony would just charge me $99 (instead of $1,600) which is what happened.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

@hellobeeboston: I am 35 and did it at 11 weeks. My OB recommended it due to my age and it was not offered in my last pregnancy which was 3 years ago. It was straightforward and the results were fast, plus you get to fine out the sex early! So no downside in my mind. Good luck!

I'm 36 and we just had the test done Monday along with the 12 week NT scan. My doctor offered it, but it was up to me whether to have it done. She said they offer genetic testing to all patients because some disorders are completely random.

I declined it at first because it was an out of network test and regardless I was going to be having a baby. When they found a cyst in the brain on the ultrasound at Week 18 (common finding that they freaked me out about when telling me about it), I decided to have the Maternity21 test then and my insurance ended up covering it as in network.

Yes, I got it (well, the equivalent: Verifi). It was offered due to my age & while we wouldn't have terminated had we learned about any findings, it was important to me to have any info as early on as possible. All turned out well & even reassured us when we did see a soft marker at a later u/s that that wasn't likely going to be a problem, either. We also loved getting to know the sex early & more definitively. :goodluck:

I'm in the minority here, but it was offered to me and we chose not to get it. For me, it came down to what I would do with that information and whether or not I wanted to be stressed out about the results for the whole pregnancy if something were wrong. Ultimately, we decided that we would go through with the pregnancy regardless of the outcome of the test, so it just didn't make sense to have it.

I'm not 35 but they offered it when my anatomy scan had a soft marker for downs. I didn't care if we did it at that point but DH wanted to. I was told at 12 weeks I had the option of the test or nt scan and they recommended nt so we didn't do it then.

Important to note - my insurance was not going to pay for it because t went to my high deductible. But since coverage is overall sketchy the company that makes the test was (at least then) willing to knock it down to 200$ if you called. It felt like a bonus because I still got the full 1200$ or whatever counted toward my deductible.

I got MaterniT21 when it was first released, and not until after I had a sketchy nuchal translucency test. At the time they offered it to me as an alternative to going straight for an amnio (though they still encouraged an amnio). It sounds like my regular midwives practice now offers it at around 10 weeks, before you're referred to the MFM for the 12 week scan.

I ended up getting the counsyl test, primarily because the NP had no idea what it was or what she was talking about. I would have rather opted for the MaterniT21. Counsyl is expensive and useless unless rare genetic diseases run in your family, and even then, to be truly useful, your DH has to get tested as well.

I have my first doctors appointment next week, I will be about 8.5 weeks, we were talking in our due date thread about the MaterniT21 test... I'm not sure if my new hospital offers or if it's now routine to give it if 35+?? I can't seem to find any information on line. I will ask the doc about it next week

But curious, did you have the test? Was it an option or required? Or did you ask for it?

Thanks!
