@zippylef: I agree. DS was definitely ready for it and was letting me know loud and clear. Even after our pediatrician's 'ok' I was still wary from what I had read online. DS was more than ready and really enjoyed meals from the start.
We also did a modified BLW. Our trouble is he would eat anything and everything!

@FutureMrsMcK: I will not start unless pedi says it is ok. She is in the 90% for her weight right now and has already beyond doubled her birth weight so she is getting lots of BM :)

Our pedi cleared us for rice cereal at 4 months because his weight was good and he could sit up supported. I would try to find some way to distract her...I let DS chew on a hard plastic spoon or bang a wooden spoon when we eat. I wouldn't start until your pedi okays it.

@Mrs.B: I LOVE @kiddosc: advice on the breast milk popsicles/ice cubes. I think its genius and A might not know the difference? She might think she's "eating solids" ;)

Okay, people can harp of the 6 month rule all they want but it's really a case by case basis. Every baby is different. I have read NUMEROUS places that when a baby starts showing the signs of wanting it, that's when that particular baby is ready.

Have you considered a modified BLW? We did it and Mrs Pen wrote a blog on it. We both started on purees and transitioned into table food over a couple of months. C is 9 months and is on all table food now. We skipped cereals also.

C was ready for food at 4 months. She took right to it with no problem because she wanted it.

@Mrs.B: my DS was the same way! I felt so bad, couldn't eat in front of him without a total meltdown. The pediatrician ok'd solids at 4 months for us. DS has always been under 15th percentile for weight and struggles to gain, though he's "tall" for his age (has always been 75th and above).
He's 13 months now and is a champion eater, loves his food. He still is in the lower percentile for weight. I also have to force him to drink liquids, he's never been much of a drinker.
Definitely speak with your pediatrician. Every baby is different.

@TurtleDoves: Yes she is EBF. I really don't want to start solids but I feel so bad because she is so upset :( which is so unlike her.

Please take my opinion with a grain of salt as I am a FTM.
I've read many reputable places that starting solids before 6m can lead to childhood and adulthood obesity, like littlek mentioned.
Also, if she isn't sitting up, it can be risky :/ So, if it were me, I wouldn't.
But, it was good of you to call the pediatrician since he will know best! Please let us know what the office calls back and says just for my own future reference :)

ps: A is breastfed, right? Because they may tell you that because BM is superior to any & all table food, to just Stick with BM so that you can make sure her caloric intake is compromised entirely or mostly by BM.

I would wait until as close to 6 months as you can. Babies that young don't digest food properly and it could lead to lots of tummy troubles in addition to the obesity and allergy concerns. I would also be worried about solid foods replacing milk that provides necessary nutrients in such a young LO. Have you tried giving her a spoon and bowl to play with? Sometimes that will help distract her.

ETA: I've also read some tips like feeding breastmilk/formula on a spoon or letting LO suck on breastmilk/formula popsicles (like an ice cube in a mesh feeder).

LO is almost 5 months and we just started veggies. So they are about 4 weeks apart, but she was very ready and does great. I would see what your pediatrician says.

Have you talked to your pediatrician? I've heard that starting solids too soon can lead to childhood obesity. But I'm no expert, just something I read.

DD will be 4 months in a few weeks and is very interested in solids. I can"t eat anything in front of her anymore because she freaks! She is usually so chill and mellow but when I eat she starts getting excited and giggling. After I eat a few bites she flips out into a full on melt down. It takes a little while to calm her down. This haa happened everytime I eat in front of her the past 3 days. I have my heart set on BLW and I'm not planning on using baby cereals at all. Should I just give her some mushed up banana or avocado? I was hoping to make it past 6 months with no solids but she has different plans.
