we had the same thing with my son around the same age .. and now about 4 months later he is doing great.

Literally it just took him holding it for so long that he couldn't hold it anymore. We kept giving him prunes etc. to help as well

But every night I wouldn't let him watch TV or play we just had to sit in the bathroom .. after a week of doing this.. I literally held him while he sat on his potty seat saying you can do it he finally went. This happened every night for two weeks and then he finally got it.
You can do it, I know it's sooooooooo hard

We have this same issue with our almost 3 year old. We bought the book (both the adults book and the children's book) that the Bees recommend in the blog post. M has been on Miralax for a while now - and is doing pretty well. It's a long process, but a very common problem for this age.

@lemondrop: @Bao: Thanks so much! I will definitely read both these posts. It's comforting to know that others have gone through the same situation.

@shopaholic: Thanks for the suggestion. A likes smoothies and fresh juice, so I'll have to make them for her more often. Hope you're feeling better!

Aww! Poor girl! And I can only imagine the suppository makes it more scary! I haven't done this so much intentionally, but K loves watermelon juice, which I blend at home. And I will happily give her a few glasses when she hasn't gone in 1-2 days. It always seems to help "move things along" and she won't hold it in. We also explain to her it's "more owie" if she holds it in and she'll feel better when she goes poo poo. Good luck!

I found @Mr.Bee 's posts very helpful when we were figuring out potty training for poop:

@MrsSRS: @plantains: Thank you for the suggestions. I will look into both.

@Freckles: I try to give DD a diet that's high in fiber (lots of fruit, veggies, prunes and water) and will avoid bananas or too much dairy. I'm not sure it's so much her diet versus her physically holding the poop to the point that she gets constipated. Unfortunately she loves going to see her pediatrician, so I think she would be excited if I said we needed to go see her!

The only way we have been able to combat this is Miralax.

Does she like medicine or going to the doctor?

My LO had the same issue. She would hold in her poops for as long as she could and then when she had to go, she couldn't hold it in and would poop in her pants. We ended up doing a sticker chart for about 2 months and once she got used to telling us right away, we stopped the reward chart because telling us she had to poo was part of being a big girl. She was fine for about a month until recently (but we are getting back to normal this week).

I kept explaining to her that when she holds in her poo, the poo gets bigger and bigger inside of her, and that it will make her sick. That means we have to go to the doctor to get medicine - "do you like medicine? Okay then we have to make sure we don't hold it in and we go as soon as we THINK we have to poo." I also tell her that she needs to drink lots of water and eat veggies so that she doesn't have poops that hurt, so she is good about drinking lots of water.

I find that we have to remind our kids almost every day so that they continue with good habits. I would try not to pressure her in pooping - she will just fight it even more. How is her diet? High fibre? For a while, you may want to eliminate constipating foods and give her foods that will help with some soft poops.

A tablespoon of mineral oil shaken up in some cold orange juice every day will remove the ability to hold poop forever. She may need to get unconstipated and have enough normal poops to stop being scared it will hurt. Try: http://www.hellobee.com/constipation/

DD is 3.5 and used to be a champ at pooping. We're talking anywhere from 1-3 times a day with no issues. For the past month or two, she has been refusing to go and I can tell she's holding it even when she has the urge. I think she's figured out how to hold it long enough and then eventually that urge just goes away.

She keeps saying she is afraid it will hurt and doesn't seem to understand that it will hurt more the longer she holds it. I'm also concerned that it is affecting her health in some way. She's only been going about once a week and that's because we use the glycerin suppository on her (which only makes things more traumatic) :bummed:

Did anyone's LO go through something similar? Any advice or suggestions would be great. We've tried everything from bribing her with candy and screen time to sitting in the bathroom encouraging her, but nothing seems to work. Lately she gets upset whenever we even mention it. I would love for her to get past this phase and be back on a regular schedule. Thanks in advance!
