I don't have a negative association with Quentin, but I think you should choose something you like better. Some suggestions:

What about Quinton?

Also, Tobias? It’s unique I feel, but still nice. It’s semi on our list for the future.

We were team green for both babies, butnonly had one boy name we agreed on for both pregnancies and our second was a boy so he was named before birth kind of. :)

My nephew's name is Quentin and everytime Dh and I see or hear his name we think Quentin Tarantino, ugh. No one wants to call him Quentin, the whole family calls him Q, baby Q.
I think Ethan is a good name.

@skipra: @periwinklebee: I think naming ahead of time or after the baby is born totally depends on your approach. We struggled with choosing names for both kids because DH and I are both stubborn. I know people told us to see what the baby “looks like”. But knowing myself and DH, I felt like we would both see the baby and decide it looked like each of our preferred names and we would still be disagreeing. So we finally picked in the 36 week range for both. I know this approach has worked for lots of people but I just wanted to give another perspective.

I think whatever you decide, once you commit to it you will love t more and more as you get to know your actual baby with his actual name. It is so abstract beforehand. Good luck!

@bhbee: I definitely like the idea of getting to meet him before we decide for sure. Our insurance won't let us choose a pediatrician until he's on the plan, which requires a name, otherwise I might be one of those people who takes days :silly:

More great suggestions - going to discuss with DH and hopefully we can narrow it down to a few finalists!

i'm partial to elias because a dear friend's son is named that. i think it's a great name and not too common at all.
another unusual one that is not too out there that i love is cormac. warren i think is another good one. i personally absolutely love the name roscoe but i think that is slightly more on the out there side.

i agree on naming when the baby is born! We went in with a favorite and some backups but it wasn’t equally favorite for both of us. Husband’s choice (I was just ok with) for #1 and the middle was a name from my family. #2 we ended up with the reverse, his family for middle and my favorite for first name. I think once you name them, something you feel just ok about can seem just right because it belongs to a real person now and with that sweet baby face. But if either of you really hates it that might be hard to overcome. Good luck picking!!! Both my kids have common names so I’m no help there.

I don't think you need to worry! I don't know how people can name a baby without first meeting him or her. Since the baby will have your DH's choice for middle and last name, I think you can be firm on making the final decision on the first name. I would probably take my top 5 or so names and have your DH eliminate the ones he hates and take 2 or 3 to the hospital. Or if he can only live with one then just go with that.
No matter what though, I vote for you to have a bigger say in it. If you have a bad association with Quentin, eliminate it!

My son’s name is Declan. It’s not out there but also not very common. If we had a second boy I liked Hudson and Lucas. I also really like Ethan and Sawyer, but DH nixed them because he didn’t like either character on Lost 😂.

Thank you all, these are awesome suggestions!!!

@LCTBQE:  The baby will have my husband's last name, and I let him choose the middle name as well to honor some of his family, so yeah, I should probably express my preferences more strongly about the first name, especially since it's not that my husband has found anything he really loves.

@Truth Bombs: agree with everything you said. @periwinklebee: I know a (gorgeous, maybe that influences my opinion) guy named Corwin--have you heard it before? It's a surname, maybe like naming your kid Carter :) another name we considered that's a family name is Lucien. We didn't go with it but I still like it.
ETA: I kind of let my husband in effect pick our kid's name by acquiescing to his rejection of all the ones I loved, and we ended up with a name I feel pretty lukewarm about. I strongly encourage you to not do that, you're doing the heavy lifting here

I will admit I immediately think of Quentin Tarantino, but probably only because I've never met/heard of another Quentin in my life. That being said, it seems silly to pick a name your husband admittedly doesn't even like that much, when you have names you love. Better for one of you to love the name than both of you to feel meh about it just for the sake of satisfying your husband's desire to not be "boring".

I knew someone named Quentin and always thought it was a cool name. I also know of Quentin Tarantino but it’s not an immediate or negative association for me. He sometimes went by Q which I thought was also cool (this was an adult when I knew him).

I like Ethan and Elias too- I’ve never met an Elias so I don’t think it’s really very common at all.

We came up with my second daughters name on the way to the hospital. The first we were team green and we never had a boy name we loved so good thing she was a girl.

I completely agree, boy names are hard! When I was pregnant with my daughter, we had so many girl names that we both liked, but never really found a boy name that we both loved. Now that I'm pregnant again, we didn't even need to discuss girl names (we'd just use our second choice from last time), but it's back to the drawing board for boy names again.

I have a cousin named Quinton a.k.a. "Quincy"... similar to Quentin, but perhaps without the associations that you're concerned about?

My strongest association with Quentin is the illustrator Quentin Blake, which is a very positive association for me. Ethan and Elias are both lovely and it’s definitely nice to have a name that gives you a little thrill when you hear it or say it (not a necessary naming criteria, but always a bonus!).
