My one and only cervical check at 38 weeks was like that. I'll never get one again.

Yeah, I'm kind of hoping she was just a little rough and didn't strip without telling/asking me. Not OK with that, even though I probably would have told her to go ahead. I still want the choice. I did tell her that I felt large and in charge and ready to have this baby.. I'll ask my doc about it when I go next week (if I haven't had the baby yet....).

I had the opposite happen. I saw a different doc for my 1st cervical check and it was no big deal. Then I saw my doctor for the next one, and yowee!!

@prettylizy: Yeah, that bothers me too. No doctor should be sticking their hand inside you without asking permission first, much less performing an intervention without your consent!

I've indicated on my birth plan that barring complications, I won't be consenting to cervical checks at all during my pregnancy or labor. My care providers are tentatively agreeable to this decision.

I can't believe so many of you have experiences with doctor stripping your membranes without asking permission first. That seems like a pretty big deal to me!

Well, now I'm seeing brownish discharge and just read a description of what stripping my membranes actually is. Seems like that could have been it. However, I do wish she would have told me that what what she was doing (if, in fact, that's what she did).

Eek! I had my GBS swab and my first cervical check (unannounced, that was a wake-me-up!) yesterday and yeah, I was like... I need to man up in the next 4 weeks! If *this* makes me want to curl up in a ball, what will L&D be like!? He was mercifully quick, however.

@BlueWolverine: This happened to me! My regular Dr. was always so gentle and I could barely feel it. I saw a Nurse Practitioner at my 39 week appt and it hurt like a mother. I had lots of bleeding afterwards so I called and then found out she in fact stripped my membranes! Maybe the same thing happened with you?

@BlueWolverine: I had a similar thing happen to me when I was about 38 or 39 weeks, my regular gentle Dr. was on vacation so I saw one of his partners. Everything was great until she did the internal and OMG it didn't feel all that great, then she said well I may have just accidentally stripped your membranes! Maybe this Dr was helping you out ;)

Yikes! Sorry to hear that. One of my favorite things about my doc is that HIS hands are tiny...like smaller than mine. ;)

I did the same thing! I thought, how on earth am I going to be able to give birth?
Good news? Once the baby drops and you start to dilate it no longer feels like their whole arm is up in there, it actually doesn't hurt at all at that point.

I had my 39 week appointment today and I had to see another doc in the practice because mine is on vacation. She was really nice and gave me the typical suggestions to try to get labor going (walking, sex, etc.). However, when she examined my cervix I almost jumped off the table. My doc is quick and easy and it felt like this one was busy looking for a magic ring or something. Holy cow.

Happy my doc will be back next week :-)
