Sounds like the other advantages outweigh this one negative!

I didn't have a baby when I lived in a third floor walk up apartment, but I went to the grocery store more frequently or did tag team trips to make it more feasible. And you'll get stronger as your kid gets bigger so it may seem less of an issue as time goes on :) I'd rather have in unit laundry for sure!

Yay! Glad yours going for it. I think it's totally doable. Just leave an ergo or some carrier in your car for going up and down. Having laundry in your house will make it all worth it

@mrs. bird: Yeah, I used to live on the 5th floor of a walk up-- grocery carrying sucked big time, but the grocery store was across the street so we just stopped in for a few things like 4 days a week. I wouldn't consider it if I didn't have someplace to leave the stroller at the bottom but it can easily go in our parking space. And not clearing off the car and shoveling will be huge!

@Foodnerd81: I'm glad you found a place! Yay! Indoor parking is a huge plus, as is in unit laundry! We have 3 flights of stairs, carrying groceries in sucks if I do a big trip, I leave things for DH to grab because I'm lazy and don't make more than one trip :P we're the only ppl in the building without a baby, our front hallway is a stroller corral! Think of how great it will be not to have to leave baby while you clear off the car & you get a discount on your car ins :)

I think we are going to do it! I jut don't think we will find anything that works better, an having the indoor parking spot, especially in new England in winter, adds more convenience than the stairs take away. I'll be so happy to have it sorted out and done!

I say go for it. We're on the 2nd floor of a walk up and it's been a non-issue so far. The people on the 4th floor of my building have two kids and everyone just deals with it!

Also I don't hesitate to take out the trash, accept a FedEx or whatever while LO naps or hangs out in the apartment. As long as I'm only going to be gone for a couple minutes and LO is in a safe place, I think it's fine.

I also have to go up two flights of stairs, and it's fine. We leave our stroller in the car, did had our groceries delivered when DD was younger, and I don't need to go to the gym! (Actually I do.) DD is now 2 but she's been doing the stairs for close to a year, so you won't be carrying a heavy baby forever.

Well, on one hand, climbing those stairs is a hell of a way to lose the baby weight. But on the other hand, that's tough. When your (15 lb) baby falls asleep in the car and then you have to carry the 30 lb load up the stairs... I don't know if I could do it. BUT, I also know how hard it is to find a place that meets all your criteria. If you think about it, it's only about a year that they would be in a baby carrier, and maybe 2 years where you would carry them up the stairs. If it's a place you really like and might stay for a while, then I might go for it.

On the plus side-- it has a washer and dryer in the unit. I am pretty used to walking places and carrying a lot of stuff, but of course, not with a baby. It's really unlikely that we would find someplace with an elevator AND parking spot-- it would basically be one or the other.

DH will be taking the trash out :)

I could never do it, mainly because of groceries. We buy cases of water, and lugging them up the stairs would be a pain. Also, taking garbage out becomes really annoying in a walk up building. I did it when I was single, and vowed never to do it again. I couldn't do it with a baby. We take our trash out every day because of LO's poopy diapers, and having to walk up and down so many stairs just to do that would annoy me. But then again, I'm lazy so what do I know.

I live in a 3-story townhouse and the back stairs - where our parking lot is, is 3rd floor access only. Sometimes it's a pain & I have to have DH get the bags out of my car but it's fine.

I figure for groceries, I'd do short, small trips (there is a store just a couple of blocks away) or drive and leave everything but the perishables in the car for DH to get when he gets home. As it is now, I'm used to carrying groceries almost half a mile home from the store, so I'm not much of a stock up all at once kind of shopper. But yeah, it would be annoying.

Also-- do people ever leave their baby upstairs while they run out to the car or things like that? If they are sleeping, or in the car seat? Or is that just a bad idea?

We live on the 3rd floor. No elevator. We will be moving to a house next month, and I won't lie I will not miss the stairs...however, it is very doable. Groceries up the stairs with a baby is difficult but other than that it's really not so bad. It's good exercise ;)

Babies get heavy fast. Imagine a heavy baby in a car seat with a few bags of groceries...
I'm on the third floor in my building and I adore our junky elevator. Otherwise, there is no way I would have survived so far and my LO isn't even 8 weeks yet.

This could potentially be my last apartment/housing question!

Would you or have you lived in a walk up with a baby? We just saw an apartment that checked all our boxes-- price, parking, space, location near public transportation, newly built so no lead issues... the only thing is it's on the 3rd floor, so there would be 2 flights of stairs to go up, no elevator. We'd have a private parking spot in a garage with storage at the bottom of the stairs, so I could lock the stroller there, but I'd have to carry the baby and any stuff up the stairs.

Would you do it? We've looked at a lot of places and haven't seen anyplace close to checking so many boxes, I just have to decide if being on the 3rd floor is doable. Talk to me about living in a walk up with baby!
