My 3.5 year old will not poop on the toilet. He’s done it twice at daycare over the last month but that is it. He’s been peeing on the toilet probably 4-5 months now and wears underwear with no accidents.

It frustrates me because he knows when he has to poop. He comes and asks for a pull up to go in. So the rule is now that he has to sit on the toilet and try. When I put on the pull up he has to stand in the bathroom to poop.

I’m hoping it clicks soon. We’ve tried sticker chart which he doesn’t care about, a small prize when he poops on the toilet which he likes but doesn’t care enough about.

Lo1 didn't have constipation issues but just didn't want to potty train, and honestly this might not be what you want to hear but we just waited it out. She liked to poop under the dining room table in her diaper 🤷‍♀️ I forget exactly when she went diaper free for real but it was maybe 3.5. We just didn't make it a big deal, offered the potty frequently and when we saw that she was needing to go, emphasized listening to her body... and eventually she was just over diapers herself

Sympathies. My 4 yo refuses to potty train. I talked to the ped about it at his 4 year checkup, and she is super against rewards or pressure in potty training, says she is not concerned, and that she has seen many cases where pressure leads to UTIs and unhealthy habits. But seriously, the kid announced last night that he does not intend to use the potty until he's 5 years old. I have tried the oh crap method, and he just pees on the floor and then cries about it and says he can't use the potty because nothing comes out when he tries.

For awhile my 2 year old was showing some readiness that we encouraged, but has lost interest. I'm thinking they may end up training at the same time, as I suspect he won't want to be in diapers once his little sister is not.

So this is not helpful, you clearly have your act way, way more together than I do. But just sympathy.

I know this isn’t what you want to hear but you may need to wait. My daughter was the same way. Very capable of holding it and no interest in using the toilet. At 3.5 she just one day decided to use the toilet. Our pediatrician said some kids aren’t trained until after 4. That said, I’ve also heard that choosing a future date to take away diapers and then doing it can work with older kids. They can even choose the date on a big calendar and then you cross out the dates. Poop may take longer anyway (did for us-she still asked for a diaper for poop for a couple more months) so maybe the constipation won’t be an issue. Especially if she’s wearing diapers at night?

@togetherthroughlife: thanks I should ask her urologist if they have a recommendation - actually I’m surprised they haven’t mentioned this idea!

@erinbaderin: so far I have found zero prizes motivating to her. Little toys, big toys, candy, other food, stickers … not sure what else to try but open to ideas!

There is likely a urologist and/or occupational therapist in your area who can give a specialized plan for your family! Withholding is pretty common and can happen for all kinds of reasons! I would seek out an OT first. :) I hope something works for her!

We started potty training just before DD was 3. Within days she had mastered peeing in the toilet. Has never had a pee accident. But she would not poop on the toilet. Would always ask for a diaper. She also suffered from moderate constipation so we were hesitant to push. So we would give her the diaper but she had to be in the bathroom (not on the toilet but in the bathroom). After 6ish months we still let have the diaper but she had to sit on the toilet. Just after she turned 4 she started going on the toilet without issue.

Honestly she has just always been a stubborn, strong willed kid who needs to do things on her own time. We tried bribes - she turned everything down or didn't care. For her it was time and feeling like she was in control of the process.

Bribery? This sounds like a joke but I'm serious - will a sticker chart or something work, if she can earn towards a prize?

So our 3rd is 3.5 and she still just really wants to go in diapers all the time (I say “go in” because she can happily wear panties and ask for diapers as needed). She will go on the small potty some, but rarely poop. She has zero accidents in panties - she just doesn’t like to use the potty. I’ve never convinced her to go in the regular toilet or at ANY public place, even though our local mall has private family bathrooms with nice small toilets that helped our others get started away from home. She has a short enough preschool day to hold it there.

I’m just kind of at a loss. I’ve considered just pulling all diapers but she also is treated for difficult constipation (already takes a lot of miralax and doesn’t have dairy due to allergy) and has repeat UTIs related to that so I’m very hesitant to do anything that will contribute to more holding of anything. So every time it’s a negotiation and I cave more than I’d like to admit.

But man I’m ready to be done with diapers. She has more willpower than us for sure though :silly:

Any genius approaches??
