My sons current and last school both have two hour nap periods. I haaaaate it. I don't know exactly how long, but I think it was maximum 1.5 hours. This year is the last year of preschool (so older 4 and 5 yos) and there is no more official nap. They did offer what they called enrichment classes that would meet during the first hour but they cost $8 a class per day. So it was crazy to me to have to pay even more than the mortgage payment I was already paying them. Pre-K A takes naps from 1-3 and Pre-K B does not nap. They recognize that kids often transition to no nap around ages 4-5 so they try to accommodate them. </p> <p>My oldest stopped napping at age 3 and we definitely had problems with nap time at daycare. My 5 year old napped until she moved to K earlier this week, as did many of the kids in her class, and I am thrilled that was an option for them. I think the 2 year old room at our daycare gets 2 hours. Very few of the 4-5 year olds nap. At our school the kids in the 4 year old room (it’s a mix of 4-5, and sometimes a few older 3s) make their own decision during nap time about if they want to be a napper or a non-napper. Non-nappers go to another room and do something quiet like draw or read. The kids are surprisingly good at knowing when they need a nap—DD randomly took a nap there like 2 weeks ago after not napping for months. So they separate them at the start of nap time. If there are 3 year olds who don’t nap they can go to the other room too. I think the parents have to make the decision for the 3 year olds though. It was the same thing when I was in daycare. If we didn’t want to nap, we colored. I emailed the owner and director and suggested a one hour cot time and then if not sleeping maybe get up and do library time or puzzles in the far end of the room... they said they are looking into it<br /> @Mommy Finger: did they still have to stay on their cot when the got the quiet activity or were they able to get up? I think making them stay on the cot for a full 2 hours if not sleeping is my issue.. if they can get up and go to a different area after an hour that would be better in my mind. I messaged one of the other moms that I just met to see what she thought and she said exactly what you said in the last line... her DD is napping the full 2 hours and then is not going to bed until 10 pm and then is exhausted in the am and making mornings really hard. She said she wishes they'd wake her daughter up after one hour.... The policy at our school is that they needed to lay on their cot for the first hour and if they don't fall asleep, they can have a quiet activity (coloring, reading at book, etc.). Thankfully they started fazing this out in the second half of the year to get ready for kindergarten so that there was no nap. I had the exact same issue with our pre-K (we just graduated). They had a required 1-3 PM block of naptime and my kiddo really had a hard time because she'd either fall asleep and then wouldn't go to bed until 11 or later, or she'd be not tired enough but required to lay there and stay quiet for 2 hours. Unfortunately there may not be much you can do about it because in some places it's a mandatory state issue for staff time - those 2 hours are considered required "lunch" for teachers, so one teacher stays for an hour with the kids for naps, the other stays the other hour. The only thing I am questioning or that has me stumped is the napping.</p> <p>It's a room of 4-5 yr olds, basically kids who will all go to Kindergarten next fall. I am aware that DD is on the older side of that bc of where her bday falls so some of the kids are newly 4 when DD is almost 5.. (and that is a big difference if you ask me)... anyway DD does not nap at home at all aside from maybe an odd car ride nap once in a great while.</p> <p>I am glad they offer nap bc some days I do think DD needs it. My concern is that it is set up for TWO hours. From 1250-250. That seems so long!! ESPECIALLY if the kid doesn't actually sleep! How can they expect a 4 yo to lay there for 2 hours and not get bored or antsy?? </p> <p>Am I wrong? Is 2 hours the norm?</p> <p>I've already emailed the owner and director asking if the 2 hr nap is the norm and asked if they'd consider a 1 hr cot time and then for those not sleeping let them get up and do quiet time in the "library" section or do puzzles or something. </p> <p>I mean I can't even imagine being made to lay there for 2 hours if I wasn't napping and I'm an adult!</p> <p>What do you guys think? is 2 hours too long? </p>
