I stay home and my husband works shift, so I would be happy.

But basically no one I know would like it. Seems impossible for working parents!

ETA: oh it's a longer day for 4 days? Not down for that. It's already so long and they start here the year they turn 4!

I guess I could see it being ok for older kids, who I assume could handle the longer day, but for little kids that just seems impossible to expect them to be learning for that many hours. I SAH so wouldn’t have to pay for extra childcare but it still seems like a bad idea.

I don't think that children should be expected to concentrate and sit still for that long. This seems like sacrificing the well being of the children in the interest of the bottom line and I'm interested to see what sort of effects that has on discipline issues in the district.

I also wonder about the quality of care that can provided via a one day a week program. Who's looking for a job that's essentially only one day a week? I would anticipate under-staffing and high turnover, which wouldn't be a care situation I'd want to put my child in.

I don't like it. I don't work ft now but I will go back soon enough. And while childcare will be an issue that is not my main issue with this. I just don't see how kids can learn all they need to know four days.

My 3 nieces' school district has been on 4 day school weeks for a couple years now. My sister is a real estate agent so she works her schedule around to where she is works from home on Mondays, and only shows houses after her husband gets home or her MIL can watch them in dire need. I texted her to ask what working parents with less flexible jobs do and will edit when she answers.

I know that it helps with makeup snow days and what not. Instead of stretching the school year out or taking holidays if we have a bad winter, they just have school on Mondays for a few weeks or whatever. They also switched to a block style schedule so they have half their subjects 2 days a week and the other half the other days. So they get more time with their teacher, instead of the usual 45 minutes or whatever it was per class. They have actually done better in school since switching, and they weren't even bad students to start out with.

I'd be selling my house and voting with my feet.

I know that sounds extreme, but I feel like parents can either move out or get themselves elected to try and change the discussion and I just don't have the time to run for office and deal with being an elected official at this time in my life.

I was reading that most Oklahoma schools are on a 4-day week because of lack of funding. Also, here in AZ, some rural schools are 4 days and my husband's district was considering this move very seriously due to lack of state funding.... and it's one of the biggest districts in the state. Parents were very upset, so ultimately it didn't go through.

For all those commenting about how inconvenient & expensive it would be, I hope you vote accordingly  Can't defund public schools and expect them to operate at the same level as before.

ETA: found a link about Oklahoma:

I guess if they provide care that comes out equivalent to the cost of usual after care it could make sense. I would actually like it from a scheduling standpoint (I SAH and would appreciate the flexibility) but I seriously question if most kids can do well for that long of a day (in terms of actual instruction time they can pay attention to - I only have kinder experience but seems like kids are climbing the walls by the usual bell and are totally ready to move on to play/unstructured time)

@Anagram: Colorado has traditionally been a blue state, and they have a Democrat as governor if I remember right.

Here's an article about the change. Schools will run up to 4:30 T-F to make up for lost time, and parents can pay $30 to send their kid on Mondays. They claim 80% of parents are happy with it.

I would also hate this. As a working parent, I'm looking forward to the day my daughter starts Kindergarten so we can stop paying for daycare. We would need to find some kind of 1x/week daycare which I assume would be expensive.

@Mamaof2: what are their reasons for the 4 day week? Saving money, I assume, but I haven't read the article. This is the type of issue where parents need to make their thoughts known by voting. I have no idea what CO is like, but I know in many republican majority states, schools aren't funded as well so schools end up doing "interesting" things to meet the bottom line. They may cut all electives teachers, reading specialists, etc. They may move to a 4 day week to save the money on electricity.

But clearly, this town needs to ask themselves some serious questions about their priorities. If they insist on not funding schools properly, then I guess they will face a reduction in quality or time.

I would hate it also since I'd have to pay for daycare. I wonder if the 4 days are longer where it removes the need for after-school care?

Currently every Wednesday at our district is an early out (1:00) so figuring out daycare for then will be a pain.

How would you feel about this?

As a working parent I would not be happy about it - wondering if they have plans for a camp or something for all the working parents on Mondays
