I have a little peanut too, my LO was born 6 weeks early. I started supplementing breast milk with 2 bottles of formula. I use a special preemie formula which helps him put on weight faster. I'm bad at taking this advice but don't worry about the percentages. Hang in there!!

@brownie: That's so awesome she has come all this way and can do everything the other kids do! Things like this definitely give me hope if my LO has to deal with this :)

@Crumbs: I'm trying every day! I made a little progress tonight, she actually drank an ounce from the bottle, not much but it's something!

@marley: I think I will try and weigh her tomorrow before and after to see how much she is eating!

@Foodnerd81: I'm beginning to feel better about getting her checked out now :) regardless the outcome at least we will know now and be able to start working with her. I'm glad it's something pretty common and many people seem to do great!

@winniebee: Your LO sounds just like mine! I swear people that see her at the store think she's still a newborn lol. Like your LO, she seems to be super healthy. Has your doctor ever been concerned?

@littlecasita1122: It is hard deciding to supplement, after this appointment like you, I decided it's time. Now if I could get her back on the bottle! I may try to get her to drink breast milk first then try and add the formula. She's so stubborn...

@banana: That's so awesome that she is doing better! It's good to hear that the PT helps :)

@TurtleDoves: Your post made me laugh! It's so hard not to worry and for the record....I've stayed away from Dr.Evil ;)

@rachiecakes: It took her a little while to regain her birth weight as well. She still hasn't doubled her birth weight yet at 4 months. How do you get your milk checked? I'd be interested in knowing how mine is. I'm surprised they don't check it more often!

First of all, I wanted to thank you all for your words of encouragement and the stories/experiences you have shared! I can't tell you how thankful I am to have all if you for advice and support. The day I wrote this I was freaking out and super worried about everything:( All of your responses made me feel so much better regardless of how things turn out.

For an update....the PT lady hasn't called me yet, ugh! My LO was not being able to eat much the past couple of days due to my lack of supply and her refusing to take a bottle. Unfortunately I think the stress of her appointment made me eat less and I was also trying to cut out sugary sweets this week and the combination lead to not producing hardly any milk. I tried giving her formula, formula and breast milk, just breast milk, she refused all even though I also tried several different bottles.

Yesterday I called the doctor again and there isn't really much I could do. I ate and drank a ton last night and continued to take my fenugreek supplement and it seems to be working. She still won't take a bottle but at least my supply seems to be getting better. The other night I was freaking out because a few hours after I fed her I tried to pump and only got two ounces combined, I wanted to cry :( Especially since she only eats off of ONE boob quite often. She's never been a big eater so I'm not sure what else I can do. Either way, she's doing much better today!

@Mrs. Pen: I'm assuming she will just be a peanut as well! She seems content and looks perfectly healthy! It's just so scary when they drop in their percentiles!

@yoursilverlining: Your reply made me so happy and hopeful! If she does have something going on, I know it's not the end of the world or anything ;)

@matador84: It seems like the majority of babies are big now that when you have an itty bitty you just worry! You are right! We can't do anything now and they are still growing. How is your LO doing in PT?

@Thehistoryofus: No, we didn't really talk about it a whole lot. The doctor didn't seem too concerned, I think I was more concerned about it and also that she wanted to wait an entire month before weighing her again. I have a food scale here I may try to use. It's hard because I know how much she should be eating but even when I used to bottle feed her breast milk she only ever ate about 2 ounces, she's never ate a lot.

@travelgirl1: I would totally do this if she would just give in and take a bottle!

My son is in the 3rd percentile for weight and 80th percentile for height at a year old. He's always been very small weight-wise. At 5 weeks he hadn't regained his birth weight of 8lbs 2oz. I had my breastmilk checked and it had hardly any fat and very low calories (I'm a vegetarian and was borderline anorexic after giving birth due to stress). I was devastated that I had to supplement but in the end it was the best thing for us. I knew that he at the very least was getting adequate nutrients.
PT is so beneficial, especially when implemented early on. My friend works in EI and she always says that catching these things early can make all the difference.
Hoping everything is alright with your LO (don't Google!) <3

@banana: so glad PT helped your friend's child out!

I just wanted to say that I am so sorry you're going through this worry! I hope everything is 100% OK. I am not going to sit here and tell you to relax because I know that is *super hard*. But, take it from the PP, it is very common to have little weight gain. There is a HUGE chance this may be absolutely nothing. Meanwhile---stay off Dr.Evil...I mean, Dr. Google.

A close friend of mine has a daughter with hypotonia. She's getting PT for it right now (she's almost 3). The PT helped a ton! She just got diagnosed with it 6 months ago but my friend said that looking back, her daughter was always low toned, even as a baby. She thinks that if she got her daughter PT earlier, it would've been so much better. So kudos to you for doing something about it now!

I started supplementing with formula at 4 months because my LO dropped from the 16th percentile to 5th. I was thinking about supplementing for a while but that check-up made me decide it was time. I'm a SAHM so he was nursing all day with the exception of one bottle, so I also started pumping instead of nursing and gave him more bottles so I knew exactly how much he was getting. I would say my LO gets about 2/3 breastmilk and the rest is formula at this point, though it will probably go to 50/50 over the next month as my LO is 6 months old now and my goal was to make it this far with breastfeeding. All I can say is do what's best for you and your family and don't feel pressure or feel guilty about supplementing if you feel that's what's best. I felt a lot of pressure for adding formula and that I wasn't trying hard enough with breastfeeding exclusively and amping up my supply. I remember just wanting someone to tell me "it's okay".

I'm sorry : (

My son has always been small - at 4 months was 11 lbs 6 oz.....and at almost 7 months is around 14 lbs. He's healthy as a horse.

Could you start giving her bottles of breastmilk for your own sanity? I switched to pumping and feeding him bottles around 6 weeks because I was very concerned about his intake. Now, I never have to guess. You could do a combo of BF and bottles.

@matador84: Hahah that sounds big to me! My son was 13 lbs and change at his SIX month appointment.

A LOT of babies get PT for low muscle tone! My nephew did (he also had the flat head and the tight neck muscles that go along with it, forget the real terms) and my SIL was really upset. My sister is an OT who works with kids and works along side a lot of PTs, and she says that it's super common and doesn't mean it is a big deal. They just like to get PT started early because it is so beneficial.

In my family, like I said my nephew has low muscle tone and still does PT. He's about 14 months and isn't walking yet, but he just started crawling last month and he's a pro at that now. My brother and SIL do get worried sometimes, but my brother also didn't walk until he was two and he's perfectly healthy, has run multiple marathons, etc.

I hope you get to talk to the PT soon so she can help put your mind at ease. No advice on the formula, but supplementing seems like a reasonable idea?

So sorry you're going through this. Everything makes us worry so much with our little ones!

I'm currently supplementing. I have been since my baby was a week old. She was tongue-tied and has a high palate so her suck is weak. So I let her nurse (for at least 45 minutes each time, because she's soooo slow) and then I follow up with a bottle.

You can also find out how much she eats by going to a lactation consultant with a sensitive scale. She can weigh her before and after you feed her.

I'm so sorry :( I don't have much to add but maybe supplementing with formula can help? That way you're still breastfeeding but at the same time you can see how much she's actually eating. If anything, it'll can give you peace of mind?

I have taught kids in gymnastics and Crossfit for over 10 years now. I have one little girl who started with me at gymnastics at 2 years old for this exact reason. She had low muscle tone and has just started to walk. Neurologically, she is absolutely perfect but physical development she was behind. She is now 6 years old and does our kids Crossfit class. She still has some problems with movement and has to work harder than a lot of the other kids. But she does everything they do. She runs, jumps, screams etc. we just moved her up 2 inches on her box jump.

Her sister had some of the same problems as an infant/toddler but at 3 had completely grown out of them.

I am so sorry. PT does not mean there is a big issue, just that they want to catch anything before its severe.

As far as feedings go, did you talk about ways to increase her weight? It sounds like you are doing everything right with BFing and that should be enough if you are nursing on demand. Can you find a LC or somewhere else to do a pre feed and post feed weigh in? We did this twice a week with our LC at the breast feeding support group. Even go to the pediatricians office, weigh her, sit in the waiting room and nurse her, and then weigh her again. You shouldn't need an appointment just to be weighed. If you are concerned go back once a week and try this.

My LO is 13.5 weeks and only 13 pounds. Don't fret, sounds like you are doing everything right! DS has also been in PT for plagiocephaly (flat head) and torticollis. My take on things is, I can't do ANYTHING to make it better right now, and time will make things better! Our babies are so little they are constantly growing and changing.

I don’t have much advice; but just wanted to let you know that I couldn’t walk until I was almost 2 years old due to issues with the joints of my hips being too loose (not sure what the actual medical term was); and I’m totally fine now. I danced ballet for many years, I ran track for a bit in high school – basically, I have zero lasting side effects. So, even if your LO does have some sort of muscle or joint issue, they may sort of develop and grow out of it and lead a totally normal life! Hugs.

Aww I'm so sorry :(:( that is not fun. I've had my share of worries with weight too.. My son had jumped up to 15th percentile at his 6 mos appt and at his 9 mos he was 6th! He is 9 months old and weighs 17 lbs. He's such a peanut but the doctor never said one word about it so I am telling myself not to be concerned. My son eats A TON so I cannot be worried.

Have you considered just supplementing with formula instead of giving up BF entirely? Unless there are other reasons indicating it's not going well..

I know @regberadaisy supplements but still breastfeeds 75% of the time.

I'm sorry you had a bad appt. :--( Don't do anymore googling until you talk with the PT!!

DD had hips that were extremely tight (she could only hold them straight) since birth. The doctors were concerned that she might not be able to crawl or walk normally. But one day, they just started getting loose and she could move them to the sides. Now she's walking! Although it's hard to do when it comes to our baby, try not to think about it. Things change so much in the first year, that you really can't read too much into it. Keep us posted on what the doctor says.

We went in for her 4 month check up on Tuesday. I knew she was small but I thought she weighed more than she does. At her 2 month check up she had finally made it up in the 15th percentiles. This time she dropped back down to the 3rd :( She only gained a pound and grew an inch in two months. At first the doctor didn't see, very concerned. She eats all day long and still has many wet diapers and few poopy ones, so I know she's eating good but is it enough? My 4 month old only weighs 10 lbs 4 oz...

Anyway, I could have dealt with that alright. She has met all of her milestones except she doesn't try and hold herself up with her elbows. And when she is laying down and you try and grab her arms to bring her to the sitting position she is limp and her head just hangs back. The doctor is referring us to a Physical Therapist because, as she said it, she just feels Loosey Goosey.... Meaning her muscle tone in her arms and shoulders is very low. When she was born, the doctor that checker her out was also worried about her muscle tone there because she was so limp and crazy flexible. But at the time she improved by her next appointment so they weren't worried. I'm still waiting to hear from the PT so we can make an appointment and go in and get her evaluated.

My mistake...I decided to google loose muscles and low muscle tone. I hate google. Now I am freaked out and worrying before I even know if anything is wrong. :(

I came across Hypotonia. Part of the symptoms describe her perfectly. I was reading about other babies having it and some sound like her and others are much more extreme. These babies tend to have delayed motor skills some I read about can't even walk until they are closer to 2 years of age. Many can't play sports, they have speech problems, short attention spans, seems to give up quickly, the list goes on and on and on :(

I'm falling apart :( I'm hoping the PT calls soon so we can go in. It's so hard not to worry about her. I know she is still my same little monkey and I could never love her any less, I just want her to be perfect and live a normal life. I'm so hoping I'm over reacting and she is fine.

After talking about this with the doctor she said it could also be have to do with her not eating enough. I've been breastfeeding, I just picked up some of that fenugreek to up my supply but I'm debating on whether or not I should just switch to formula. She doesn't currently take a bottle so I never know how much she is eating. Any thoughts? I have to go back in a month to do a weight check, but I just want to make sure she gains and not show up and she has barely gained a half pound.

Thanks for listening Bees, I'm really just freaking out until I get a chance to actually go in.
Any advice on switching to formula?
