I work in a big children's hospital in the US and we get LOTS of patients from the Gulf region. Our international office is going crazy trying to figure out things with our patients from countries on the banned list. Just at my hospital there are dozens of 100 kids in this situation. And kids from other countries not yet on the list are getting freaked out and trying to come to appointments early before they can get banned. It's just heartbreaking.

@agold: It depends on each case. Some non citizens pay cash with a pre service negotiated rate (similar to how US citizens frequently do medical tourism in other countries now); other severe cases like this one, the family asks the medical team to do the work pro-bono. In this case, the family sent medical records from Iran to various hospitals and this Seattle team had agreed the baby's medical situation was dire and they agreed to do the work pro bono. I'm not sure if the family still has to pay for other stuff--at the very least, they would have to pay several months of room and board in Seattle.

So heart wrenching to see all the stories of those who had every right (& zero risk) to come into the US. :crying: The implementation of this restriction was SO far off, that regardless of the intention, this was a fail of epic (global) proportions. We look like a 3 ring circus at best.

I've read they're looking into other options including treatment in Europe, that they choose the hospital in Oregon because it's close to family but might have other options. I hope they can get the little girl the treatment she needs fast.

@erinbaderin: good job Canada, again.

That is so sad. Who generally pays for those types of surgeries?

I just read that Ontario has pledged to help kids who need medical procedures who have been banned by Trump, hopefully we'll get that set up quickly so this baby can be helped!

Have you seen this? It's heartbreaking!

4 month old baby Fatemah was scheduled to travel to the US so that she could have life saving heart surgery. Unfortunately, since she is coming from Iran, her family had to change their plans to meet with doctors at Oregon Health Sciences University due to the immigration ban.
http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/03/politics/travel-ban-iranian-baby-heart-surgery-trnd/

As an update-- They are hoping now to enter the country on a humanitarian waiver, but to do so, the surgery must be paid in full, in advance. https://www.generosity.com/medical-fundraising/baby-barred-from-us-for-surgery-due-to-visa-ban .
