mine was always always always a single sided nurser. Very infrequently took a second side *Shrug* Just what it was, I guess!

@hilsy85: haha I spent many a night pondering why this girl was making things so difficult for me!! I am not sure, but I think she was more comfortable on the left side (maybe I held her differently?) and my flow was MUCH faster so she got more milk. She would scream and push away when i tried the right. I stressed and stressed over it and then finally accepted that I'd just nurse her on the left and if my supply ran out, I'd wean early. but that never happened. the body is so amazingly adaptable and can redirect the milk however the baby wants it, I guess!

I'd just keep doing what you're doing - offer both but don't push it to the point of fighting her over it. Maybe it's a phase, maybe it's just a shift in how she likes to eat :)

@Pirouette: oh wow! interesting! do you know why? glad it didn't affect your nursing relationship!

@LindsayLou: hm I wonder if that's what she's doing...it would be a big switch from before, when she would eat both sides and then be good for like 4 hours.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: it's not that she has a preference for one side, just that she will only nurse on one side, versus nursing on both sides, in a session.

Thanks all. It's not that I'm concerned about her nursing on only one side generally--I know many people do this. It is more that it is a big change from how we had been nursing to this point, and also coincides with her becoming more distracted when nursing generally, plus I am a little concerned about her weight, since her percentiles were dropping at her 3 month appt. Of course, after I posted this, she nursed on both sides for her last two sessions of the day :silly: So I"ll just keep on keeping on!

Both my kids only nursed on one side per feeding. Occasionally my son wants the other side, but this is rare. I am an over-producer for the first 6 months or so though, so I think that this really is the reason behind it.

My LO does this sometimes. It's never affected us negatively besides being slightly lopsided here and there. I try to make sure I always start with the side I finished on so that it may not be as full and he will want the other one as well. That's seemed to work fairly well lately. We saw a Lactation consultant early on and she said it's perfectly fine for them to do one side at a time. Some mamas nurse from one side exclusively and have no issues. To quote her "we have two boobs incase we have twins!" Ha!

My 5.5 month old just does one side per feeding. I alternate sides at each feeding. My supply has adjusted. I have always had an oversupply and still struggle a bit with that but it's regulated from where it used to be.

I was just listening to something on Serial I think anyway a chiropractor said when babies develop a preference to nurse on one side they may need a realignment.

Mine typically only eats from one side and has sinned about 2 weeks old. She's 3.5 months now. I assume your supply will just regulate over time to match what she wants to do. As long as she seems happy and is still gaining I'm sure it's fine. Then if she wants to take both again then your supply will have to catch up again.

My lo really only eats one side at a time. She's done this since around one month I think, for a while I was worried as I would forget to offer the second side but she's chunky and happy and let's me know when she's hungry. My supply has always been totally fine, I have one side that gets more full if she sleeps all night but she doesn't eat that side and act hungry so I think she's good. As long as your lo switches at each feeding I would think your supply would be fine

My 5 month old is a snacker, who only eats from one side at a time. She acts totally full after eating from one side, and then usually wants the other side 30 to 40 minutes later. She switched around 3 months, and doesn't show any sign of stopping. It's not very convenient, but she's growing and happy, so I deal with it.

at around 4 months, my LO stopped nursing at ALL from my right side, and never ever went back to it! I occasionally pumped that side for a little while before giving up and just letting her be a lefty nurser, and I had no problems with supply at all.

ETA I nursed almost a year and a half this way!

My LO only ate from both sides when she was a newborn. She ate from one side at a time for the rest of the 10 months we nursed. Sometimes, I pumped the other side, but not always.

DD is almost 4 months and we have nursed on both sides for each nursing session since birth. She usually does 6-10 min on one side, and 5-6 min on the 2nd. The last two days, she has only wanted one side, and flat out refuses when I offer the 2nd. She seems content, as she isn't crying or fussing (except when I keep trying to shove boob in her mouth) and will sometimes take the 2nd side if I offer an hour or so later. I am a tad bit worried about her weight gain/my supply if this keeps up. Will it just re regulate? Anyone gone through this? Hoping it's just a phase.
