I remember back when I was still pregnant and researching chiropractors & babies (a spin off of trying to flip the breech boy) I discovered that infants can go in for "adjustments" that are more like massages & one of the most common "success stories" were babies who previously hated their car seats. I guess for some they just weren't comfy. I always figured I would try it if the car was a problem for us. I do know you have to find a chiro who is trained in child/infant practice since it's obviously different than adults. Might be worth a shot!

Ugh, L *hated* the car seat almost right away. Bloody murder screaming the whole car ride. Luckily 95% of our driving with her in the car was less than 5-10 minutes so it was never lengthy drives, but even a quick trip to the grocery was so stressful after listening to her scream for 3 minutes.
She eventually got better (6 months??) and now at 13 months I would even dare say she semi likes the car seat? She has three little bunnies that she travels with and she loves talking and laughing at them. It took her a month or two to actually like them, but now she needs all three before we leave.

D went through this, too. Lasted for about 1.5-2 months. He'd be ok if the car was moving, but as soon as we stopped, even for a stop sign, he'd scream. It was SO stressful. But it passed!

@stine_ciro: Yeah, I've done the carrier, it's just super tough because we've had the past 3 months be like, below zero temps so it's such a hassle to try to get her in/out of the seat/carrier. This spring and summer it'll be way easier!

@HolisticMama: Awesome article, thanks! I'm looking at that seat now!!

@redsmarties: I'm hoping this is what happens for us, once she can "play" more she'll be ok...hopefully.

@Mrs. Pen: Haaahha, yep, so mNy tears...from both of us! ;)

@.twist.: The red lights are hell. Or railroad crossings where there's a train. Or traffic. Booooo.

@Ash: We have the b-safe. Lame. I even bought two because the first one I got off NBD was nasty and used but I couldn't return it.

L has never liked the car seat. He fusses and fights all the time. As long as we are driving (usually) he's ok, but if we stop for any length of time (red light!) he will start crying! It's awful and I have avoided and rearranged appointments and schedules to work around his awake/sleepy time.

I'm hoping a convertible will make a difference, but we aren't doing that until he grows out of his infant seat. :/

This was my kid. It was so bad for awhile that I wouldn't take him anywhere because it would be a scream fest, and I would just end up crying as well. Unless it was a 5 minute drive, I didn't go anywhere unless I had DH with me. When I was with DH, I would pump a bottle before we left and feed it to him in the backseat, and sit with him. That would appease him.

It wasn't until he was about a year old and could play with toys that he got better. I wouldn't say he loves the car, but at 2 he tolerates it as long as he has some toys and books. We can interact with him a lot more.

We went through a carseat-hating phase - it lasted from about 4 months to 5.5 months or so. Especially at night, she HATED being in the carseat. But now, at 6 months, she's totally fine with it. She can see herself in the mirror, and plays with a toy while she rides.

I don't have much advice, because I don't have any LOs yet, but this thread did remind me of this message board post I read awhile back:

http://prebabyblog.com/2012/10/convertible-car-seat-what-saved-our-car-trips/

So as @cyan mentioned, maybe a convertible really can help. :)

@ms.janedoe: LO started this recently too, but I think it's because she starts falling asleep and she is seriously fighting naps right now. She's fine in her car seat until I put it in the car. I've started bringing our carrier with us so I can take her out while I'm shopping or whatever.

@junebugmama: Ugh, that's where I'm at right now, I dread...and even avoid...going places because of it. I can't run to the store quick, because she'll scream and won't sit in her seat if I bring it in. My parents are 30 minutes away, so I haven't gone there as often as id like... Sucksssss.

Glad it got better for you!

I will tell you that my son was a nightmare in the car. It actually caused a lot of mental stress for me. I hated going places and listening to the crying would make me so upset. I tried switching to a convertible car seat, and if I'm being really honest, I even turned him forward for a short ride to see if it would help stop the behavior. Nothing worked.

Eventually I rearranged my entire days, to only going places, when I knew he was tired and would fall asleep. Otherwise the car rides just fell like torture for both of us.

My pedi reassured me that it would eventually change and he would grow out of it. At 8 months I started to notice that 50% of car rides were better and eventually, it stopped. It was probably the worst part of Mommy hood for me with him in the beginning. It made me bananas!

Is she still in the infant seat or in a convertible seat? My LO's travel got much better when we switched to the convertible.... I think she likes being up higher to look out the window?

So LO is 4 months old (on Thursday!) and as the title says, she despises the damn car seat. I'll strap her in, start driving, and within minutes she starts to fuss...then it escalates from there. The other night it turned into a full screaming meltdown.

She HAS fallen asleep in it a few times, but it's rare. I hung those Sassy bug things from the bar and we do have a mirror (yeah, yeah, projectile danger), but so far they haven't done much. Once she starts to "get" the mirror and looking around, do you think it might get better? Or am I just doomed for all future car rides?
