My son just doesn't follow directions. I have to threaten to remove toys in order to get him to do anything and I seriously hate it. We had a talk about it last night at bedtime and he agrees to shape up, but then we just fall back into our former routines. I think part of the problem is actually me, I need to be consistent regardless of how pressed for time I am.

Yup, my 3.5yo last night when told to sit and stay out of the way while her dad was doing something, ran up and down the hall laughing. When I went to remedy the behavior, she locked my bedroom door and closed it in my face.

She just can't seem to grasp that this behavior just makes the punishment worse than if she just listened to begin with. It seemed more manageable before we added a baby to the mix.

About to hit 4 and you aren't alone, but glad to hear I'm not either. I was seriously wondering if it is only my kid!

Yessss! My 5 year old is the same way! I swear terrible 2's and 3's was a cake walk compared to this. His little attitude has got to go!!! I too try and remind myself "he's only 5" but geez. I feel ya. Some days I wonder where he came from. I miss my sweet cuddle baby.

Yup. My almost 5 year old can really drive me crazy. They know how to be defiant to a whole other level. It makes the 2's and 3's seem really easy (I also have a 2 year old).

oh lord, i was just having this conversation with my husband yesterday. Except for me, I remember not liking my son's sense of humor/defiance from 2.5-3.5. He is a month shy of 4 right now and I'd say things are getting much better but he still does that whole running-away-whenevr-i-ask-him-to-do-anything (i.e, pull up pants after bathroom, washing hands, brushing teeth, putting socks or shoes on, and the list goes on). I just keep telling myself that he is "only" 4. That's still young and, eventually, they will grow out of it, especially/hopefully when they start kindergarten and being older/bigger/more capable is something they want to be because of the older kids.

My son is driving me up the wall!! Can anyone else relate?

He has always been such a sweet and good boy and he still is, but he's gotten so much more defiant, his tantrums are as bad as ever and his evolving "sense of humor" does not strike me as very funny. I feel sooooo bad because I know he's just being playful but whenever I need to get him dressed or tell him to wash his hands or whatever, he runs and hides and thinks it's hilarious. It is not hilarious! Put on your damn pants!

Can anyone else sympathize? I feel like such an evil, humorless biotch these days.
