@MrsSCB: Plus, we keep a lot of doors/windows open in the fall/spring/nice summery days...and the screen doors aren't exactly latched as well as the glass sliding doors!

I was brought home at 3 after being found in the laundry room of out apt. complex crawling on top of washers mostly naked. My mom used to tell the story all the time. That would scare the crap out of me.

For some reason I never thought of security systems being useful to keep people IN, but wow that is so handy. Otherwise I don't even know how you'd ensure the LOs don't escape once they can work the doors!

We have a security system we turn on at night pre-LO, but now has the extra benefit of beeping/notification if a door/window is open on the first floor.

A friend of mine's niece opened a door and got out while dad was napping. Someone on base brought her home. She was 2, it was below freezing, and she had fallen in a mud pit. She could have died! My kid can open childlocked doors, so uh...yeah. She finds them challenging.

We have an alarm system and chimes on the doors, so even if it's off, something beeps/makes noises if a door or window is opened. It's so scary when they're able to get out but don't have the ability to realize it's more than just a fun adventure.

I have a fear about my LO somehow doing this bc she loves to play outside...But we set the alarm every night (and lock deadbolts which she can't unlock), and if she ever tried to go outside, the alarm would sound.

Yay for ADT. Keeps the bad out and the good in!

It's not always a happy ending. Here is a little boy locally who died after wandering out in the cold. Parents need to be vigilant. :S

@Mamaof2: Omg! At least he stayed local, haha. It seems so scary once they're old enough to figure out how to unlock doors and everything!

@Mrs.Someone: Yeah, don't think I would want to reward that escape either...

I found my 3yr old on the deck one morning at 6am - he was "relaxing"

....and that is why we have an alarm system now!

Have you guys seen this story? It's both funny and a little terrifying. This four-year-old girl escaped her house at 3 a.m. and got on a bus in Philly, heading off to buy a slushie. Thank goodness the bus driver called for help. She seems like a precocious, smart little girl, but I hate to think of what could have happened!
