@Litebrite: @Kemma: The teachers said that they do address the name calling, but it still stinks that he is thought of as the school "cry baby."

My 5 year old has been like that, though I think more towards 5 than 4. Totally agree with @Kemma: the first thing we ask is do you need to cry about this? What is the solution/what can you do instead?

It has helped a ton esp when it comes to fighting with her 3 year old sister. I always tell her don't come crying to me, find a solution! If she is doing that, do that! Doesn't always happen but more often than not she is able to figure it out herself.

If it's just big emotions, I just let her go through the motions as I think it's fairly developmentally normal for them to be so emotional.

My oldest likes to default to crying when something goes wrong so I often ask her “do we need to cry about this?” and “how can we fix this?”. I think they sometimes just need practice at new responses so that crying isn’t always their first reaction.

With regards to the name calling at preschool I would absolutely be speaking to the teachers because it’s not ok for other kids to be speaking to him like that.

@crazydoglady: I posted about my emotional 4yo DS a while back. He always was and still is sensitive, but that time period for us was the most extreme. Things have gotten a little better as he matures. Still not easy, though.

Also, how rude that his class mates are calling him cry baby!

@crazydoglady: for our DS it was also speech related. He started getting speech therapy at about 2, and by the end of kindergarten, his issues had resolved and along with that his ability to verbally express feelings went up, so crying went way down. Until then we tried whatever we could, humor, distraction, mirroring and verbalizing his feelings back to him, etc.

@MoonMoon: What kind of tactics? The teachers think it is speech related and I agree. It's hard for him to voice his frustrations accurately, so he cries. They are working with him on it and tell the other kids it's not ok to call names.

Aww, poor little kiddo! My DS is 6, and I distinctly remember an increase in crying at around 5. And it seemed to be for reasons you mention-frustration and not knowing how to regulate emotions. I had to remind myself to mirror his feelings, give him an outlet, and time. Does your LO respond to soothing tactics? Does his teacher have any input? I how this passes for you guys, it did for us, but I know it's hard.

So, DS has never been the easiest kid (speech delay and strong personality.) Lately, he cries about EVERYTHING. Like, the shoe on his strap won't work, he had to take a bath, etc. Apparently, he has also become the class "cry baby" (mind you he is the youngest of the lot and is also just immature for his age.) So, he cries about something, they call him a "cry baby" and then he cries even more.

Last night, I found him crying on the floor of his room instead of sleeping because his blankets fell off him.
I mean, I can be a sensitive person and I have NO problem with crying, but I also want to teach him to productive vs just reactive. Like...just pick up the blankets!

Is this a typical phase? Any tips?
