I’d drop the nap (as much as I loved the nap). We dropped it and started putting my son to bed at 730 and he’s out within minutes.

I put him down at 715 tonight and it’s now 723 and I think he’s sound asleep (we had a busy day and he was miserable!)

I do think if he would nap like 30 mins a day he would be in a better mood, but he won’t. I get a long nap once every 10 days or so when hes being a monster. He struggles a bit to fall asleep that night though.

@LBee: Thank you for the feedback! I'm going to talk to my husband and see what he thinks about dropping the nap or @luckygirl: at least dropping the nap some days to start. Never thought of that, thanks!
@jape14: I agree about overnight sleep being most important!
@SugarMaple: That's so late! Does your child at least sleep in? Before 6am just doesn't feel like morning to me!

Following. My almost 4 year old as been taking FOREVER to fall asleep the last month or so. He lays quietly in bed, awake, until 9:30-10 some nights. He takes a long nap(1- 2 hours) so I know this is the problem. He gets so cranky without a nap tho :(

We cut the nap around 3.5 because our previously awesome sleeper was taking forever to go to sleep, waking up early, and then taking an hour nap. Once we cut the nap he went back to sleeping 7:30-6:30 (approximately). He’ll occasionally nap if we are in the car after lunch or when he’s sick but he’s honestly better with no nap. It took him a few weeks to adjust and I didn’t see us cutting the nap that early but I feel like overnight sleep trumps napping.

My 4 year old only naps once or twice a week, and he still goes to sleep by 7:30/8pm. So if you're not prepared to totally drop nap, you could try cutting back on how often he does.

We tried to cut our LO's nap last summer, but he became a total mess after about a month, so we started occasionally adding nap back it. So it could also be worth trying to drop nap to move bedtime a bit earlier (and hopefully wakeup later), and then sometimes add it back in if his behavior really suffers over time.

Also if he is sleeping straight through at night, that of course is a good thing!

I would drop the nap and push bedtime up. That's at the low end of the recommended amount of sleep for a child that age. My son is a similar age and naps 2.5 hours and overnight sleep is 8:15 PM to 6:15 AM. My guess would be the nap gives your son just enough of a "refresher" to stay up late and then he's overtired, which is causing the earlier wake times.

My almost-4-year old is driving me a little nuts. We’ve struggled with his sleep since birth and worked really hard with a good sleep schedule and routine, dark room, white noise etc. Now he’s in a phase of sleeping approximately 8:45pm-5:30am and then napping an hour in the afternoon. I’ve considered cutting out his nap but he’s so tired at nap I don’t have the heart. Any ideas? Let it go and lower my expectations? Cut the nap? He’s been so cranky recently!
Thank you!
