SIRM takes "older" (she's not really older but you know what I mean!) women. (New York and New Jersey) Their results look less good than other places, but it's because they take harder cases. .

Tell her not to let anyone push her into donor eggs until she's given own eggs a solid try.

NYU and Cornell also are very good, but they'll boot you after age 44.

@ms.line: @momazon: I asked about donor eggs, and she said she might be open to it over time but she's not there yet.

@agold: She's not really into message boards, but I will mention it to her as an option!

Is she open to using donor eggs? The age criteria for shared risk donor recipient programs are different than own egg restrictions. (I say this as someone who is currently pregnant from a donor egg IVF cycle after five years of trying on my own including six fresh cycles of own-egg IVF.)

I don't think there are ivf consultants. She could read a book about it and check out SART data for each clinic. She could also ask friends for references to docs (happy to pass along mine). There's only a handful of clinics I would consider in NYC, and perhaps she could narrow it down further by location and insurance. Also I don't think she would qualify for shared risk, in NYC or anywhere due to age. Honestly, the best piece of advice to give her is to book an appointment after finding a doc and do it soon. Time is of the essence. Harsh I know. But that's the reality.

@Trailmix: I've read that your uterus never really "goes bad," just your eggs. If you're willing to use an egg donor you can carry a pregnancy well into your 60s!!

IVF success rates have so much to do with the type and severity of the diagnosis (male factor, tubal, DOR, endo, etc) that she would probably need to go through a diagnostic cycle with an RE before she could really get a handle on her treatment options and probability of success. It would be awesome if there were independent IVF consultants, but I've never heard of one. I just read a lot of books and HB threads.

ETA: While pregnancy is certainly possible, the odds of success with IVF drop so dramatically into your 40s that I'd be surprised if she found a shared risk program. REs don't want to lose any money on them!

1. I don't know anything about NYC. If she can't find what she's looking for in the city is she willing to travel to another clinic that does offer it? A lot of REs will work with each other. She could have her monitoring appointments locally and travel for the consultation, egg retrieval and transfer.

2. I'm not sure if something like that exists. I think it might be a hard thing to do since everyone's IVF treatment is different. You can find clinic's SART data online. Maybe that could help her narrow down clinics?

I don't know about NYC, but I know that most clinics here have patients in their early 40's as clients. Just about finding the right doctor, I think. Good luck to her!

There is such a thing as a medical concierge but I'm not sure if that's really what she's looking for either...I've never heard of an IVF counselor, probably would be a useful thing to exist tho! Also, just some support for your friend, I met a 49-year-old women who was pregnant with twins at an ultrasound so conceiving in one's 40's does happen!

I am not in NYC but the shared risk option at my RE was only up to age 38 and had other criteria. Also an IVF counselor sounds awesome! But I have never heard of one.
The Hellobee IF ladies were my counselors :)

A friend is mine is turning 41 soon. She has one child but hasn't been able to conceive a second for five years now, and is looking into IVF. She looked into shared risk programs, but most of them only accept women who are 39 years old or younger!

She had two questions and I thought I'd ask you all for advice:

1. Are there any shared risk programs in the NYC area willing to take on women older than 39?

2. Is there such a thing as an IVF consultant who can walk her through the various IVF options and success rates? It doesn't have to be an RE - even just talking to someone who knows this stuff would be really valuable to her, I think. Do IVF counselors/consultants exist? Every time I google "IVF counselor", I see mostly links about genetic counselors.
