@Musicmomma82: That still sounds pretty good to me. :) But then again, my LO didn't sleep for a stretch longer than 1.5 hours until 9.5 months! :P

I bet he's continuing his nighttime sleep, but all that really matters is the total amount of sleep for a 24 hour period. And keep in mind that while the sleep charts probably say 13-14 hours per day for a five month old, your little guy may not get that much, or he may get a little more! You may try adjusting his bedtime a bit to see if that helps.

(ETA: I also evaluated sleep on a weekly basis and not just a daily basis, so as to get a more complete picture of her sleep . . . as you know, some days are great sleep days and others not so much, and calculating the total sleep time for each week gave me a better idea of whether she was getting adequate sleep or not).

Also, there is a pretty big shift in sleep patterns at around 4 a.m., and many babies have a hard time sleeping after that time (I think there was a blog post about this . . . @MrBee, I think it was one of @MrsBee's?). Even now at 12 months, my LO doesn't always make it over the 4/4:30 a.m. hump.

It's not an 8 hour stretch. Last night he had a 5.5 hour stretch, then another 3 hours. Now he's working on another hour (not sure if I should count this as night sleep or a nap!)

His total sleep for the day yesterday was 12 hours, but before that, he was only getting around 10 for a few days (hence the decision to sleep train).

8 hours is a really great stretch for a 5 month old! What is his total sleep time for the day including naps?

For the last couple of weeks, our 5 month old has been having major sleep problems, including extended middle of the night wake-ups (awake for 1.5-2 hours and no amount of nursing, bouncing, or rocking, would allow us to put him back in his crib and actually have him stay asleep).

We made the decision to Ferber 2 nights ago. We simultaneously unswaddled him, and stopped using his pacifier. Bedtime is going great so far! There has been minimal crying. He's also woken up fewer times (twice instead of three times). For the first wake-up (around 11-12) I feed him, put him down awake, and he puts himself to sleep in 15-20 minutes with just a little fussing. The second wake-up is at 4am...and he will NOT go back to sleep. We ended up nursing/rocking him back to sleep around 6:30. Most of that time was spent with him laying wide awake in his crib.

He's going to bed around 7, so there's no way he's getting TOO much sleep. It works out to be about 8 hours of sleep between 7 and 4.

Does anyone have experience with this? Suggestions?
