I felt horrible and still do actually. The consequences will of course depend on age but regardless of age, the child will be marching back into the store to explain what they did, return the item, and apologise. Loss of privileges will be a given and depending on the child's age, community service will also be imposed, ideally at the store they stole from, but if not there, somewhere else in the community that I'll find, and it won't be a fun project either! I then were it in my hair later that evening - not a very smart thief. My sister stole a couple times when she was young. I was such a stupid kid. Mom and I were in the hardware store (locally owned) and I thought the colorful rubber things that you put on keys to tell them apart were pretty. I took a handful and we left the store. I stashed them under the car seat but Mom found them. She made me walk back in with them and apologize for taking them. I don't know who was more embarrassed, her or me.</p> <p>If my LO ever stole something, I'd do the same thing. You take it back and apologize. Now, when they get older, I don't know.
