We are leaving for a trip on Thursday ourselves with our 3.5 year old daughter, so I'm glad to see this thread, But in the past, we've done a mix of activity books, ipads (with movies and games/apps), and walking up and down the aisles when it was okay. Mostly I'm just here following for any additional ideas! :)

Definitely a direct! Just get it over with! And at that age it should be pretty easy with a tablet/games/shows, and maybe an activity book and snacks.

Hands down direct. Besides having to get settled a second time, layovers allow the possibility of something else going wrong - luggage being misplaced, a flight being delayed or cancelled. Simpler is always better. :)

5-6 hours really is not too bad, and on a plane she'll be contained and can color, use the iPad, read, play with small toys (Shopkins or a Barbie or cars or whatever). Honestly, after a meal service, and a movie, she'll really only have another hour or two to kill anyway! If you don't fly often, the novelty of being on a plane will provide distraction as well!

Definitely fly direct! At this stage, I don’t worry about my LOs and air travel anymore. For long flights, they get in flight entertainment and for shorter ones, the iPad or books/coloring books/activity books. I only bring like one snack though because if we are flying more than 3 hours there’s a meal, and no one ever really wants the snacks anyways. If I remember, I’ll bring a single serve pack of gummy candy for each of them to eat during the descent, especially since my son sometimes has ear problems on the descent and he doesn’t like gum.

Direct! 5-6 hour flight with a 6 year old shouldn't be too bad. They have longer attention spans. Just lots of iPad, games, TV. :) If you're trying to avoid screentime, even some art supplies should do.

I loathe myself for it, but when we fly, my son gets access to his ipad for almost the entire flight. I just don't know any other way that gives me a little relief and doesn't require packing a ton of items to do with him.

I would do a direct flight always, unless there is simply no other way.

Oh I wouldn’t do a lay over. My son is 4 and he’s a good traveller. Snacks, drinks, ipad, stickers. He’s good to go!

Direct. I’ve taken my boys on two 5.5 hour flights, at 3/10mo and 4/22mo, and they both were pretty easy as long as I had lots of stuff to do, shows on the iPad, and snacks. I think it’s better to just get it over with rather than extend it and have to get all the stuff off and then back on the plane.

We fly back and forth to Europe fairly frequently. I would do the direct flight. I think layovers are much harder and just drag the whole thing out. My almost 5yo and 3yo are for as long as I pack snacks and a device with games/shows. I als download some kindle books to read to them. That gets us through pretty well.

I flew round-trip to London (from the east coast) solo with my 2.5 and 5.5 year old this year and honestly, the 5.5 year old was easy. I don't think there's any need for a layover, especially if you don't want one. I brought a ton of books and games and art stuff but he was totally entertained by the in-flight entertainment and snacks. I'm actually not sure we spoke more than 10 words to each other the whole way home :silly: The 2.5 year old was another story...

I know there are some seasoned travelers on here. We are used to short trips - 2-3 hour flights with a connection. I am thinking of taking my daughter (will be 6) on a 5-6 hour flight cross country this summer. Is it better just to get it over with and do the direct flight or should we go for a layover?

I hate layovers so much.

Also...I'll be ~5 months pregnant.
