Are you flying into a NYC airport? What about stopping by first before checking into the hotel and whatnot?

Newburgh is pretty far from New York. I would not recommend driving. If you want to go into the city i would definitely recommend the train.

Eta: if you've never been to New York before, I would one million percent not drive into it. Traffic is a nightmare, parking is a nightmare. It is just not a place for cars.

3:30 landing plus an hour to get out of the airport means that the earliest you will hit the road is 4:30. You are likely to hit pretty bad traffic getting into the city by that point. I would try to catch the 4:52 (arrives 6:17) or 5:12 (arrives 6:45) train from Beacon to Grand Central Terminal if possible. You would have to drive from Newburgh to Beacon.

I recommend skipping the hotel check-in until after you get back. It will save you time.

There are return trains from Grand Central at 9:47 (arrives 11:08), 10:47 (arrives (12:08) and 11:47 (arrives 1:21). It would be a really long day.

ETA: If you were willing to take the risk of a delay and not eat much for dinner, you could probably see a Broadway show. They usually start at 8pm and are in midtown so walking distance from GC. The risk is that if your flight is late you could miss the curtain and potentially waste your ticket.

ETA 2: If you postpone your hotel check-in until after you get back from the city, then you should call the hotel when you land to confirm the late check-in.

I'm going to be arriving in Newburgh, NY at 3:30 next week, with the whole evening to kill by myself (I'm there for a work event the next day).
I really want to try to make it into the city since I'm going to be sooo close (well, Google says an hour without traffic, who knows how long it'd really be).

First, am I a nutball to try to do this alone, and for the first time? I've never been.

Second, with such limited time (arriving at the airport at 3:30, have to get my car, check in to the hotel, etc), what would be worth the effort? Even if I literally see the city for an hour, I think it'd be a fun adventure. I might have time to eat at one restaurant, and see one touristy thing?

Or, anyone on here with no responsibilities want to hang out next Thursday night? ;)
