@Irene: sorry I couldn't be of more help. It sounds like things are progressing in the right direction so hopefully over the weekend it'll figure itself out. Good luck!

@prettylizy: Hmm... he never clawed at his mouth..... hmm.....

@purrpletulips: He would be pulling his ears if he has an ear infection but he doesn't, and he looks way too healthy to have a summer cold! (He was sick 2 months ago so I know how he's like when sick)

For the past 2 days I noticed he was latching weird until this morning he refused me after 4 minutes. Now I am suspecting that he's just being lazy and prefer the bottle over breast.... After 2 very unsuccessful sessions, our nanny left and I try to reinforce the skin-to-skin on him, took a bath with him in the big tub, and lay down together skin-to-skin while offering my breast to him. He took it, and latched on the way a newborn does! He was very sleepy though while doing that. So I hope I can straight things out over the weekend before our big trip. Wish and pray for us...

Could LO have an ear infection or summer cold? That could cause it to be uncomfortable while laying down to nurse whereas sitting more upright for a bottle wouldn't cause pain.

@irene: I never even checked with my ped about it! Whoops! lol! I'm such a softie, I just cant stand to see her in pain, and when she was clawing at her mouth with both hand, I gave in. The recomendations on the tube say its okay for babies over 3 months.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

@prettylizy: Husband was talking about giving him a bit of gel on the plane. Our pediatrician doesn't recommend it but at this point I am at wit's ends. I will try to get some Camilia.... thanks for the advice :)

@Baby Boy Mom: Besides, actually I think we tried that the first time this nursing strike started.... but I ended up almost losing my supply because I didn't pump for 1.5 days (engorged) and he only occassionally eats from me. So ends up he was hungry and I almost lost my supply.....

And to be honest, I would have just let him be hungry if he didn't gain weight so poorly...

I agree with just sticking with it. LO is not quite 4 months and she is starting to get her teeth. Sometimes I'll try a little orajel on her gums about 5 mintues before I feed her so that it doesn't hurt so much to suck. Camilia is a great homeopathic remedy for teething pain. I felt guilty giving her so much tylenol so I felt like this was a good option.

@Baby Boy Mom: That's good for you.... mine won't want anything to do with the boob if it is not necessarily a hunger issue. He won't even consider using me as a pacifier... if I offer the boob at random times he's just gonna cry and wonder what's up with me.

Now I regret not "spoiling" him and let him make me his pacifier when he was a newborn..... at least he would have associate my breasts as a more comfort place....

@irene: LO definitely had periods when he was not interested in nursing and he was on and off the breast all day, but eventually he always "gave in". I didn't give him a bottle just kept offering breast over and over trying different positions and locations.

No wonder breastfed babies don't gain weight as easily as formula babies do.
How do ancient women do it when there were no breast pumps and no bottles??

Honestly, it stays hard! My LO is like a gymnast on me and still nurses for like 5 minutes and then pops off.

Another thing to remember that around that age they start nursing much more efficiently where they don't need to nurse for 20 minutes. My LO would drain 1 side in about 8-10 minutes where as an infant it would take her almost 15-20 per side.

I agree, nursing at this age in general was just hard. They aren't a little infant anymore that just wants to stare at your chest all day. They want to see and do.

@Baby Boy Mom: Did your baby have nursing strikes though? And would you pump if he refuses and cry? For me I worry if I don't pump I'd lose my supply - I was talking to my friend who was in the process of weaning and she said in within a week her supply went down to exclusively BF to pumping only 4 oz a day. It is all these issues that gets me worked up and stressed.

@irene: My LO is doing something similar because she's teething and her gums hurt when she sucks. I try not to take it personally and just give her a bottle of pumped milk since it's easier for her to get the milk she needs without the pain.. I also give her some Tylenol a little before her next nursing session to help mitigate the swelling and pain. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but either way she gets fed and I don't stress. I didn't want to force it on her and make breastfeeding a bad experience for her

At this age I had to stick with nursing in quiet rooms without any distractions. We also didn't offer any alternative, so when he was hungry he just had to nurse and that was that. Hope it works out soon!

Yes he's teething. When you feel his lower gums, you can feel them cutting through.

But still. What am I going to do during the trip? Sigh.

The problem is with me too... when he does this thing, I freak out and pump nothing. When our nanny is here it would be better because she's so calm, but by myself, or with my husband I'd usually get overly stressed and would pump nothing.

I have posted this before a a week or so ago that LO is having a nursing strike. It was a painful 4-5 days and it was a hit and miss. Thought it was over... but then it never really tapered off.

Today, at 5 month 5 days, he's starting to do this thing again where he latch on for 4 minutes, arches back and cry. won't take the other side. I tried to make him eat but he just cries whenever I put my nipple next to his face.

I wouldn't be so worried if we didn't have to go to Australia. I am afraid he'll wean my supply during this trip and get himself on formula, while he had never taken formula before except on the first 2 weeks when my milk hasn't come in. If I knew this was gonna happen, I wouldn't have planned to go.

I am trying to stay positive but it is very hard. And when I stress, I pump nothing.
