Well hopefully it's just a phase for you guys and maybe if you try nursing a bit earlier it will solve the problem!

Unfortunately for us, it wasn't a phase and we ended up having to sleep train for bedtime because she wouldn't go to sleep, nursing or not. But even now, if she is overtired before bedtime and nursing she will be fussy.

@ellewoods84: thanks! I do think he's overtired, hoping that wasn't why he was fussing though! DH had insisted on keeping him up till his usual bedtime even though he's not been napping well lately and starts to fuss earlier than usual. I'll insist on starting his bedtime routine as soon as he starts to fuss!

What do you do now for bedtime?

I know it's so frustrating when you know they are hungry, but won't nurse! I have found that when my LO is too tired, like not tired enough to fall asleep, but basically just pissed because she is hungry, but also tired she is very fussy at the breast and it's a struggle to nurse her. My LO used to nurse to sleep also and then it stopped working, so maybe that's what going on? Maybe try nursing a bit earlier? Hope you get it figured out!

Help! My 5 month old has always nursed to sleep but the last few days he's been incredibly fussy at the breast at bedtime. He eats, pops off and cries.

This is his normal feeding time (he nurses about every 2-3 hours) so I know he's hungry and I hear him swallowing so I think there's milk coming (when I squeeze, milk shoots out).

He has not been fussy during nursing any other time but bedtime :/ When he fusses, I switch between breasts, try with and without the shield (he's nursed with the shield since birth), switched positions, burp him in between and always nurse in the dark in his nursery with white noise. Nothing works to calm him down.

I also don't think he's teething as we don't see anything, he has not increased drooling and doesn't have red cheeks, although he is fussier during the day overall and has been sucking/chewing on things more overall....so maybe it's teething?

Help! Since he only fusses at the nighttime feed I don't know what's going on!? I finally got him calm by trying the pacifier a few times (the first couple of times I tried to give him the pacifier he got pissed!! Like, he was pissed while nursing but pissed when not nursing!!??)
