Thanks everyone. I really do appreciate the reassurance.

I just got back to the pediatrician's office and she confirmed that there is nothing to worry about, he just has to outgrow it. She was impressed with how well he is gaining and gave me a note for daycare.

LO only recently stopped spitting up large amounts at 7 months but it bothered him so he is on medication for it. The medication doesn't reduce the spitting up but rather how acidic it is so that it doesn't hurt him on the way back up. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't worry about it if your LO is happy and gaining weight.

@HazelEyes: I remember that 5 months was prime spitting up time, for DS and many of his same-aged friends. Around a month or two later, he wasn't spitting up at all anymore (after solids were established).

Oh yeah! E (#2) is the definition of a happy spitter. No matter what we do, be brings back up enormous quantities of spit up. We have rags stationed all over the house. C (#1) didn't spit up much and had weight gain issues, but E spits up all the time and is growing like crazy, so the pediatrician isn't worried. She just said that his sphincters have to mature, so expect it and have a rag ready. In the past couple of weeks (VERY recently) he already has spit up much less, so I think we are growing out of it (6 months in 10 days).

My first was a happy spitter. Give him 4oz, he'd give you 2 back. Give him 6oz, he'd give you 3 back. It lasted probably 5-6 months, until he started eating more solids. it got slightly better at 2 months when he went on reflux meds, but not a whole lot. His pediatrician wasn't concerned because he was gaining fine and didn't seem bothered by it at all(he had spit up multiple times at the office).

My first was a happy spitter after every single feed until she started sitting up consistently on her own, but even then, she was still a happy spitter on occasion until around a year. She would spit up huge amounts every time, to the point where I would wonder if she actually kept anything down, but she was always happy and gaining weight well so our GP was not worried about it at all. I wouldn't worry!

@gilmoregirl: @PurplePeony: @JoyfulKiwi: @sungirl: @beesknees: @mrskc: @Espion: Ok. Thank you so so much. Sigh. As if going back to work isn't hard enough! Hopefully when we start solids in a week or two it will help. MIL said that DH outgrew it when he started walking, which was at 11 months. Sigh. That seems so far away.

@BabyBoecksMom: Well at the last doctors visits they have said it is not reflux because he is not upset by it. I guess that's the difference? I'm still going to ask today. Again.

My son was a happy spitter. He had to always have a bib on because I would otherwise be changing his clothes multiple times a day. I know he was definitely over 6 months when he grew out of it.

I'm sorry the daycare is stressing you out about this. If his ped isn't concerned, then I wouldn't worry.

yep- both my kiddos were happy spitters. stopped around the 6/7 month mark when we started solids. still happens occasionally- but rare. it was so much that he would be soaking....and so would I. Many outfit changes. many many outfit changes.

We had a happy spitter too with my first DS. The pediatrician said he'd probably stop at 6 months, he didn't but it did get better. I'd say it was probably 8-9 months before he mostly stopped. We have another DS now and at 3 months looks like we have another happy spitter. As annoying as it is for us it was just a laundry problem! GL!

Could he have reflux? I doubt it if he's a happy spitter, but it made me think he has it because you said he will spit up large amounts even hours after eating. That's what my DD would do, but she definitely has reflux.

I had a happy spitter and it lasted until maybe 6 or 7 months old. I went milk-free until he was about 10 months old, but it didn't really affect his spitting. Is it possible that the transition is causing him to cry more, so he's spitting up because of that?

If the pediatrician isn't concerned, don't let daycare stress you out. And I'm sorry you're/he is having a tough transition. I hope it gets better soon!

There are lots of spitters in LO's daycare class, her included until probably 6 months. Even now, at 9 months, she spits up on occasion. I found it got quite a bit better when I went dairy-free, but didn't go away entirely. If your ped doesn't think it's a problem, I wouldn't let daycare stress you out about it.

We have a happy spitter, more or less. Spits up a ton all the time, and we also do all the same things you mention. I'm dairy and soy free (for other reasons) and it makes no difference in the amount of spit up. We've been to the doc more than once about it and the pediatrician has assured us multiple times that it's only a laundry problem.

I actually am concerned about taking him to daycare because I'm afraid it's going to be an issue. I really think he just needs to grow out of it.... But ugh. So much spit up.

My son is 5 months old and still spits up large amounts. As in large puddles both soon after eating and randomly even hours later. I nurse and supplement and it doesn't seem to be a difference which milk he drinks. I pace bottle feeding, sit him up and try and have tried having him stay still for a good amount of time before playing.

I have brought it up at all his well-baby visits and the peds have all said that as long as he is a "happy spitter" and is gaining weight, I shouldn't be concerned. I guess DH was also a big spitter when he was an infant too. So inconvenient, but fine, I can deal with it.

Well, I just starting bringing J to daycare this week and the teacher (who has been there for 12 years) is really concerned about the amount of spit up. Especially being well past three months. The principal of the school even asked me to take him to the pediatrician's office to check him out again and bring a note. Cue me getting all worried all over again since I wasn't there to see if it was his norm or not. (Add in that he's barely napping and crying a lot. Again, not out of character, and probably from the transition, but still… not what I need to hear)

Anyway, I wanted to see if any of you ladies have had something similar, and have any advice before our dr.'s visit tmw. Did medication work? Did changing your or your LOs diet help? Did your kid just outgrow it?
