My son ate like your daughter. Once he had food, he wasn't interested in his bottle (he was also formula fed). I spoke to my ped about it, and while we tried to continue with as much formula as possible, by 10 months, we were down to one bottle a day. He just wouldn't drink it. So I supplemented him with whole yogurt and mild cheese. My ped was okay with it.

@zippylef: I went through the same thing at around the same time. I ended up going to exclusive pumping for the past two months :-(

@brownie: Yep, fast flow is too fast. She definitely threw up on me. Not trying that one again. Plus, she still only ate 4oz of her 6oz bottle!

@Sammyfab: Thats exactly what she does! She refuses to hold the bottle though. :/ I've been trying to teach her how to do it and she won't.

Wow! She's a big girl! Go C!!

You didn't say if you're offering the bottle or solids first. I always nurse first then offer solids 1.5-2 hrs later.

Last week my LO was refusing to take more than 3oz in his bedtime bottle. It was driving us crazy because he normally takes 5-7 oz. he would scream, arch his back, clamp his mouth, etc., and he even refused to nurse. Finally we started giving him his bottle on the change table and he grabbed the bottle and basically fed himself the whole thing. I think it was his way of asserting his independence!

@brownie: You know, I hadn't thought about that. I do have some fast flow nipples. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Have you tried offering the formula in a sippy cup with the meal? That may give more opportunity for milk to be taken. We started a sippy with milk very quickly because ours refused bottles. Have you tried a faster flow nipple?

@Coco Bee: Yep. We had an appointment the week before last and she was 19.6, BUT she's also 29 inches tall. She's just a big girl. She's taller than a couple of my friends 1 year olds.

As for eating overnight... sometimes? She picks weeks where she'll sleep 12-13 hours straight. Most of the time, she wakes up once to eat between 6:30 and 8 when she gets up for the day.

I know! I wasn't going to try and wean her until after her 1st birthday. :/ I don't know what to do. She's not screaming hungry and seems satisfied but I feel like she's not eating enough, especially since she's nearly 20lbs.

wow that is so strange!! Especially since all babies would need to continue on formula for the first year. I don't have any advice for you though - sorry :-/

However, I have noticed that Cobi is nursing less since we started solids too. I think my supply is going down because of it and it turns into a vicious cycle. I'm not sure what to think.

C is almost 5.5 months. Normally, she eats between 25-30oz of formula in a day. The last couple of weeks she has been eating 2-3oz and then refusing to eat any more. She will arch her back, turn her head and get angry and start yelling/crying if we continue to try and get her to eat.

Since 4 months she has been getting one thing of baby food a day. She just eats however much she wants, whether that be 2 bites or the whole 2.5oz container. (I don't want to hear anything about starting solids before 6 months, please. It was a decision made with our ped and we are all comfortable with it.)

Well, today she ate 5oz of baby food. She ate a bottle and about an hour later we did the food. She still seemed hungry after the first jar so I offered her another, thinking she would eat a little and be done... she finished the entire thing. Grand total today, she has eaten about 13oz of formula and 2 containers of baby food, one with a tbsp of rice in it. She will likely eat 1 more bottle of 7-8oz before bed and another 2-3tbsp of rice cereal.

My question, is this normal that they start refusing to eat like this? I feel like she may be trying to wean and I know she is way too young for that. What do I do?
