Thank you for your quick responses! I think some of you are right with finding a new pediatrician...this office came highly recommended by a lot of people but I'm not getting a good feel from them. The doctor is friendly but the nurses on the phone have made me feel like I'm inconveniencing them by calling.

I made an appointment for tonight right after I read your responses but if I don't get the answers I'm looking for, I'll call around tomorrow morning to find a new ped. Actually, I'm going to do that regardless because even if they give me the answers we need, why is it taking them this long to listen to me?? The fact that they made it seem like this is just something we have to deal with is upsetting, but I'm glad I wrote my post because now I see that it's not normal for peds to just brush off this type of thing.

@Modern Daisy: I hope your LO feels better soon!

I could have written this post. We started daycare at 5 months and DS got an awful cold 3 days in. A month has gone by and after two rounds of antibiotics, two ear infections and several fevers his stuffy nose and cough have not gone away or even really disappated. I am also very concerned about the longevity of it because its starting to seem like if his congestion doesnt clear up he will just keep getting sick.

We use a vicks vaporizer at night, saline spray and nose frieda teice a day and we give him a long warm bath every night. This all definitely helps, buthis congestion an coughing refuse to get better. I am also sad that he probably doesnt even remember what its like to be healthy.

Did they listen to her breathing? My LO had a cough for a long time as well and the Dr kept saying it'll wear off. Finally we took her back a second time and they sent her for an x-ray just to be sure even though they didn't hear anything in the lungs. Turned out she had pneumonia.

I only mention it because I am just getting over pneumonia and it was the "cackling" in my lungs when my Dr listened that diagnosed me.

@BabyBoecksMom: My Ped is the same . . . if the cough sticks around for 1-2 weeks, they want to see LO back in the office for further evaluation.

6 weeks is just too long. :( I sure hope your LO feels better soon! ((Hugs)) to you both!

I don't have much advice, except our ped said (when my DD had a bad cough) to pat her back, while she was laying on her tummy with one hand shaped in a cup form to prevent fluid from settling on her lungs? It seemed to help.

Hoping your LO's cough clears soon!

I think I might find another pediatrician. I know if my daughter has a cough that lasts more than a week or two, the doctor always has her come in to get checked. She ended up with pneumonia when she was 10 months old... and the crackling in her chest was the main symptom that I noticed (besides the cough). She needed antibiotics and an inhaler to get over it. The nurses should be blowing you off like that...

If it is asthma related, the humidifier could actually be part of your issue.

My son began day care last year and he was sick a lot the first two months, but now it has tapered off. He did have to go several rounds with a nebulizer and inhaled steroids to clear up his lungs.

Hello - I don't post on here much but I figure I could use some advice. My 5 month old started daycare the first week of January (4 months then) and it took all of 5 days before she got sick. It started out as just a nose issue but quickly turned into a bad cough as well. We took her to the doctor because we didn't like how the cough sounded and they told us she had bronchiolitis.
We did all the normal remedies...bulb, saline, humidifier but after a week of that, her cough only got stronger so after a really horrible night of no sleep and standing in our steamed filled bathroom, I took her back to the dr to make sure it didn't become something worse. Nope, still bronchiolitis. They didn't give her anything, even though I heard in some cases babies can get those nebulizers. They told us to keep doing what we were doing and it should just go away on its own - in a week or two is what they said.
Well here we are, 6 weeks later and this cough/cold is still around! It's definitely not as severe as it was, but she'll wake up with coughing fits at least 2-3 times a night and her nose is always either clogged or runny. Every day is the same routine (with the bulb, saline and humidifier) so while we've become quite the experts with dealing with this, it's starting to get really annoying! I feel so bad for her because I think she's so used to it that she probably doesn't remember what it's like to not feel sick like this. A friend of mine was holding her the other day and she said it felt like her back/chest was crackling when she breathed. I know babies who go to daycare tend to get sick frequently but I didn't think that meant she would be sick non-stop- I thought we'd at least get some breaks in between. If it were just her nose, I think I'd accept it more, but I just wish this cough would go away!! I did call the dr again just to see if the longevity of this was something to be worried about but the nurses there kind of blew me off like I was some crazed first time mom who calls when my baby even makes the slightest noise. So maybe you all can ease my mind...is it normal for this to be going on so long? Is my LO ever gonna get a break from this or should I just expect her to be sick nonstop for her first year of daycare?
Thanks for your help in advance! I swear I'm not usually such a worry wart but I just hate that hearing her coughing-fits at 3AM is our new norm!
