So later that same day the drumming sound returned. The pedi was not able to fit us in until today. And she saw pus behind his ear drum. So ear infection and antibiotic for the first time ever for him. She also said it’s possible to have an ear infection without a fever

He woke up this morning and I asked if he still hears the drumming and he said no and gave me a thumbs up. So I hope we have resolved the problem.

@Shantuck: @Foodnerd81: thank you for your responses. I was guessing maybe some water in it too or fluid from nasal congestion.

I just tried debrox ear wax softening/removal drops right now and put him to bed. He pedi recommended it months ago when she said he had a lot of ear wax but I never bought it. After I put the drops and made him lay with that ear up for 5 minutes I was able to see more better into his ear canal and it looks like he has a tiny reddish pinkish dot like a paper cut in his outer ear canal. So maybe he stuck his finger in there and got a cut from his nails. Idk.

Anyways fingers crossed that the sound goes away tomorrow. But I might just call the drtomorrow anyway if I still see the minor cut. But maybe if I give the cut a few days to heal maybe it’s related to the sound he’s hearing although I don’t really know how that could be the cause but kind of weird that it’s there. Sorry for rambling.

My kids are seriously trying to kill me with all their issues.

My 4 year old has complained of “crinkling” in her ears. When we went to the doctor they said she had fluid in her ears that was infected and a little bubbly, I guess, so she was hearing the bubbles moving around. So, my guess would be some kind of fluid in his ears. If he seems ok and says they don’t hurt, it’s probably just congestion and fluid from the cold.

I’ve had the exact thing he is describing- it feels like a tiny drum thumping quickly in my ear, but only for a few seconds at a time. No idea why.

My 5 year old was complaining of ear discomfort recently (obviously a little different than what you’re describing) and was diagnosed with swimmers ear (which is essentially an ear infection in a different part of the ear). He hadn’t been in a pool in months but apparently you can get it from bathing or from having a cold (he had had a lingering cold at the time). Anyway, it might be worth checking out his ears to see if the clog could be getting infected. We waited it out and then he woke up in the middle of the night in a lot of pain.

My DS has been complaining that he hears a beating/drumming sound in his right ear. I asked if it hurts and he says no. He’s getting over a cold. Any ideas?

I think it’s a piece of ear wax that I see but I can’t get it out. Or maybe he got water in it from the shower. He mentioned it yesterday and today he said he still hears it.

He also has a fever from the cold (he has all the same symptoms little sis had last week so I don’t really think the fever is an ear infection). He’s acting normal, and eating normal.

Should I call the dr? Or wait a few days?
