I love the Dear America series. Also, around 5th grade I read a book about Sacajawea and was very into her! I don't have a specific book rec but I'm sure you could easily find a bio!

I read a biography on Harriet Tubman at that age (written for young adults) that made a big impression. I think it made a big impression not only because she was a strong woman but because she showed that strength even as a girl / young woman.

Those Dear Americas are perfect--they were still very popular when I was an elementary librarian (the 5th graders loved them).

She's interested in Little House (she's seen a lot of the TV series), but hasn't read them yet (I swear I gave her the books but I guess she can't find them?).

@loveisstrange: That looks perfect! Thanks!

Has she read the Little House on the Prarie series? I googled "historical fiction young adult" and goodreads lead me to Code Name Verity. It sounds interesting!

Maybe have her check out the Dear America series! I remember reading them when I was that age and loving them. They're fiction, but pretty historically accurate.

My niece is about 11, and my mom said she's really starting to open up and talk to her a lot more on a more grown up level.

She's learning about early American history. Last week she was complaining that they only read about men. Hah!

Does anyone have any suggestions for books geared toward 5th-6th graders (she reads chapter books) about women in history, or really just historical women at all (doesn't have to be early America)?

Biographies would be great, but even historical fiction would be ok. Series would be even better!

Thanks!
