I think I'd take a break from activities and try again in another year or so. It sounds like it's just causing some frustration/stress at this point. Not worth it imo  also, so much can change in a year. He maybe more ready then.

So maybe he's not ready. I don't see why not take a break, and try something again in a few months, or a year. There is some value in doing sports when your heart isn't in it, but it might go better if you wait till he's more independent.

My kid is super shy and if given the option he would rather hide by my side and not participate until it's almost time to leave. However if I can just drop him off for something he'll warm up and join in eventually. He also hates having to do things the way he's told to when it comes to moving his body.

For these reasons so far we've only signed him up for swim lessons. He wanted to do them so we jumped for it. I do have to remind him some weeks that he does have to finish out the set of lessons. Sometimes he spends the whole lesson checking to make sure we are still watching him.

Is there a way you can just watch where he can't see you and see if he warms up to it after a few weeks? Also going in between lessons will probably help build his confidence.

(Sorry to write a novel but we've been dealing with this a lot too!)

@muffinsmuffins: I think you should tell him you wanted to sign up for lessons and you need to see it thought. Do you want me to watch or what over there?

I also have a 5yo and i think she would get that she wanted lessons and she needs to finish them and then going forward if she asked for lessons for something I would remind her hey you’re going to need to stick it out. Also I get wanting to see them do the activity but i sweat even though my kids love me the most I’m also their biggest trigger and they do better at some of this stuff without me being “present” (read hiding)

@Anagram: ha that’s interesting! DW was actually like this too and HATED her parents coming to her events. My parents were super involved and I loved it. Sports were a family event. I have no issue dropping him when he’s older but he’s so young still. Plus I selfishly want to watch him do these things for the first time and enjoy it with him, maybe take some pointers from the instructors to help him on my own too. I also don’t want to push him if he’s not a sporty kid...we are more just looking to get him out of the house during DS2 naptime.

@gotkimchi: I’m only thinking of giving in because he did 16 weeks of dance and did the same thing every lesson from day one (pouting at us and refusing to participate) so when he did it this time I’m like ughhhh here goes 10 more weeks of this. He fought me to get ready and go as well. Could just be first lesson weirdness but I can’t really hide as easily during skating as I kind of need to be close by in case they need a parent to get the kid if they get hurt. Plus I want to be able to watch him do the activity!

@muffinsmuffins: some kids embarrass easily-maybe he gets more into the lesson without you there?

I was like that growing up—I hated for my parents to come to my tennis matches or anything else. In high school, I made it to state in this weird public speaking competition I was in for scholarship money, and my poor mom had to drive me to another city and get a hotel, and I didn’t let her come into the auditorium to watch. I told her if she wanted me to do well, she had to stay out. And she did, thankfully my mom is cool and doesn’t take that stuff personally. In any case, I only got 3rd place, so no big 15k scholarship for me, lol.

DS1 is 5yo. We signed him up last summer for soccer and it was a disaster: he hated it and didn’t want to participate. After much discussion we allowed him to stop going and asked him what he would rather do. He asked to do dance class which we happily signed him up for with a friends daughter. He would go in and do the class then the parents invited to watch what they learned at the end. Every time he would stand and stare at us as and not do the dance when we watched. When we peeked in, he would be participating fine. We thought, ok weird but whatever.

Fast forward to today: first skating lesson which he was keen on. I’ve take him to public skating a few times since last year and he’s doing well but I wanted someone to teach him better than I could. Same thing: he sat on the ice and stared at me, not listening. I had to move to the other end out of sight so he couldn’t see me. He did a couple things but the instructor said after he was very reluctant and not having it whatsoever. I can’t get anything out of him as to why he behaves this way.

Would you keep trying activities? I’m inclined to drop skating and just take him myself until his confidence builds? It’s so so so annoying and frustrating to take him to these things and have him act like that.
