I'd take him. I left my baby when he was like 7 months old for a work thing, but he stayed with my husband. Pumping put a major cramp in my style for that trip! And I hope not to have to do that again with my second baby.

I agree that my concern would be the distance. If something went wrong (he was refusing to eat for grandma, etc) you are just sooooo far away from him and it would be tough to get home right away.

I would go only if it was closer and I could back home relatively easily if needed. Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable being on another continent just in case of an emergency.

But everyone (and every baby) is different, I have friends who have left their 7 month old to travel around Asia for several weeks and others who are yet to spend a night away from their 2 year old.

I think you'll be fine if you decide to do it. I've left DD for 1, 2, and 3 nights for work since she was born. (She's 9 months now.) I missed her like crazy, but I had work obligations. If this trip is for you, and you have great childcare, then that's even better. You'll get some time to relax, and your daughter will get to spend some fun time w/ grandma.

my parents left me to go to hawaii for at least a week before i even turned one month old (they left me and my brother with grandma). i was a little offended when i found out, but i guess i'd do the same if i had the chance and felt good enough to travel.

I took a four day trip away from my 9 mo old and left her with DH. She was on formula so it was easy. It was great to be away. Something else to consider is that going to Spain, you will be jet lagged coming back. For an international trip, I would consider taking your LO, although I'm sure that would greatly change the dynamic.

I'd happily leave my child at any age to go on an awesome trip for a week, but that's just me :)
We left LO overnight with my parents for the first time when he was a year old (I'd have been more than willing to leave him before then, but there was no occasion to do so), and it was awesome- did it again for four nights when he was about 15 months, and while he had a great time, I definitely started to miss him a lot the last day. We had friends go to Belgium for a week when their LO was about 18 months, and they said the first 3-4 days were great and then they really missed their daughter (though they still thought the trip was absolutely worth it).

@yoursilverlining: excellent suggestion... and yes to the insurance. we were talking about doing that so we could back out if we wanted too if we end up booking.

i know! spain! always wanted to go there!

Hmm, I have no idea since LO isn't here yet so my instinct is to say HELL YEAH GO!, but I agree with @yoursilverlining about doing a test run.

I would suggest leaving your LO with grandma for a night soon and see how you feel about that. We did a night away when LO was 12 weeks, and it wasn’t bad. It was actually really nice to get a whole evening and night of alone time with my husband. If I started to wonder about LO I just reminded myself that she was being completely loved on and spoiled by my parents; which was true! Could you buy tickets but get insurance or whatever so if you want to cancel at the last minute you can? 6 days is kind of long, but I do really want to go to Spain so it’s a hard decision!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: @Mrsbells: yeah... that's the fear, I am not sure i'll be able to leave him for that long. we either have to book now or pass and it's hard to know where we'll be in 7 months, but it doesn't seem like it would get any 'easier' to leave him as he gets older, maybe harder...

My lo is eight months old and I cant even imagine leaving her for one day, let alone six. I am also still breastfeeding 6-7 times a day, and pumping and storing that much on vacation would be a major drag.

That being said, everyone has different comfort levels. You wouldnt be a bad mom or any less of a mom by choosing to go. And it sounds like your DS would be in great care while you're gone.

Sounds like you have a very willing and able Grandma, so I'd go for it!! LO will be fine and yes, I'm sure you will miss him like crazy, but it will be great for you to have some baby-free time. I say do it!

@MusicaV: hey - no, we haven't been away from him overnight yet! He's only 10 weeks old... so probably between now & then we may go away from him maybe one night.... Yeah, I'll def leave breastmilk with grandma, and I'll just pump & dump. Don't think we'd bring LO with us, seems way to complicated. but maybe?

That sounds awesome! Has your LO been away from you for long before? If you're still BFing, you can leave a stash with Grandma, but will you just pump and dump to keep your supply up, or do you have a place to freeze your pumped milk while you're there? Would you consider bringing your LO on the trip? He may not remember it, but you could show him pictures and tell him stories about it when he grows up!

OK. thoughts?

we were invited to go to Spain for 6 days this summer... It would be awesome I'm sure, but LO will only be about 9 months old. His grandma is PSYCHED at the idea of getting him for a week. but we are nervous. I'm sure it would be a fabulous get away for the two of us, but we're worried about leaving LO. And the worry is just about missing him really... and I hope to still be breastfeeding at least 1 or 2x a day, but I can pump on the trip.

But we are so torn! I just want opinions, I'm sure it will be fine, LO won't even remember we're gone....

We are big travelers, but obviously things have changed - it's really just fear of the unknown.
