@Emsmems: at 6 months we were starting to stretch towards 2 hours between naps and she was still taking 3 good naps a day. I did start lengthening the time between naps gradually and by 7 months she was usually on two naps with the occasional 3rd short nap in the evening. I was kinda doing the 2-3-4 schedule but it was more like 1.5-3-3 for awhile. At 11 months we always have 2 naps and it's a 2.5-3.5-3 schedule.

At 6 months LO moved to a 3-3-3 schedule...she couldn't have handled 4hrs of awake time at that age either. Naps were around 1.5hrs each.

We're consistently at 2 naps now, a week shy of 7 months. He gets up around 6.30, then naps from 9 til between 10 and half 10. Then goes back down between 1 and 3.30, bedtime is at 7.15. So I guess it's kind of a 2.5-3-4. I started trying to move him when his lunchtime nap got a bit longer, and he started fighting his last nap of the day - but it took a few weeks before he could consistently stay up long enough from 10-1 for his next nap to take him through the rest of the day. He does get pretty tired by the end of the day, but his bedtime routine starts at 6.30 - so once that's underway he chills out as he knows he's off to bed. I love only having 2 naps to worry about now!

My son did 30 min naps from 4-6 months and it was brutal Bc would only stay awake 1.5-2 hours. Right before 6 months his morning nap got a little longer which made it easier to stretch out his awake times. However, because he only slept 10 hours at night (7-5), he needed 3 naps until around 8 months.

@daniellemybelle: bedtime is usually 730. 7 if he doesn't take his last nap and is in meltdown mode, 8 if he sleeps a long time or goes down late for his last nap.

@Foodnerd81: thank you! I will watch this tonight!

@Emsmems: I think that what really helped was a couple things. We did the stretching times out that wye let her cry each week at night. So we are up to 25 min currently. But she almost never goes that long before going back to sleep. The other thing that helped was one day I was so frustrated with trying to get her to settle for nap that I just walked out to let her cry. I needed a break. So I let her cry while I decompressed. I was going to go in at the 15 min mark but she fell asleep right when I was about to walk back in. And her going to sleep for naps have been good ever since. She still takes 2 short and usually 1 long nap a day, unless we're out and then she sleeps like crap. She really can only sleep well at home. She doesn't even fall asleep in the car! Weirdo. Lol.

So yeah, over all its better. I'll never take sleep for granted again.

@Emsmems: This is not the one I was thinking about- I think it was from an Isis webinar-- but this blog post was helpful: http://childsleepscience.wordpress.com/2014/03/25/nap-101-part-4-when-and-how-will-my-baby-drop-naps/

(The blog is by two former Isis sleep consultants and I really like their approach).

What time is bedtime? I would say at 6 months is a good time to not let any naps run past 4:30 or so & to start an earlier bedtime.

We transitioned to 2 naps right before LO turned 6 months but it was because her naps lengthened to about 2 hours. Her ideal wake time was 1.5-2 hrs so if she had been taking short naps still we would have stuck with 3. Some kids take 3 naps until they are 8 months or even older if they are cat nappers.

@Emsmems: When we switched to 2 3 4 he was in bed, asleep by 6 pm. No joke. Eventually his bedtime stretched later, but dropping his third nap meant a super early bed time. So you might try that!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: 7 hours?! That's awesome!!! I'm so glad things have turned around for you! Did you just do it by gradually increasing how long she cried for before you got her when she woke up?

@mrs.shinerbock: we did CIO for going down for naps/bed about a month ago. We haven't done any CIO for early wake-ups or motn wake-ups. Sounds like we are in the "normal" range still, I just feel like he should be stretching out his awake times!

@Foodnerd81: I'd love to read it if you can find it. He's been really crabby and clingy when he gets tired and as the day goes on and he's not tired, so I have a hard time deciding if he is REALLY tired as it gets later in the day. I'm wondering if he's also in a wonder week/ going to "leap" soon and that's why? I'll just give it some more time and maybe try to stretch his awake times and see if he can do longer. I'd LOVE to get on the 2-3-4 schedule soon!

That is right around the age when se transitioned to 2-3-4. I had been putting her down every two hours but naps were not great so I tried stretching her awake time and she started sleeping for longer stretches. I remember reading the four hour thing and I was like, No way! She canNOT do that. Few week later as she was ready.

I read a good sleep article that advised not getting stuck in the newborn rut (putting her down as soon as he showed a sleep cue). Ill try and find it. If your Lo isn't ready yet she might be soon.

That sounds just about what LO was doing at that age. We did a little bit of nap training at 5.5 months because she would only go down for a nap by nursing. We started putting her down between 1:45-2 hours after she woke up, unless she got really tired before that. She would typically sleep 45 minutes with the occasional 1.5 hour nap thrown in there, and have 4 naps a day.

Around 7 months, we started stretching the in-between time to 2.5 hours and she started sleeping 1.5-2 hours for 2 naps and 45 min for one. She still fusses for almost every nap, but it's usually less than 5 min. If it goes longer than 20 min, or she gets hysterical, we'll go in and get her.

Well, I know my LO is a month younger than yours, but we still go up for nap at 1.5 hours awake time still. More than that and she's CRANKY. We keep her up to like 2 hours, maybe 2.5 after her last nap before bedtime. Her bedtime is 630-7. And she wakes up around 730.

Btw, she is FINALLY sleeping about 7 hours the first stretch. She still wakes once or twice but puts herself back to sleep usually. Yay!

What was your LO's awake time at 6 months? I have been reading past posts about 6 month old's nap schedule and many people talk about the 2-3-4 schedule. My LO is just coming up on 6 months and he can't stay awake for 3 hours, let alone 4.

He usually gets up around 7, and is crabby and rubbing his eyes within 1-1.5 hours. Then each awake time after that is usually only 1.5-2 hours. Each nap is usually only 30 minutes, although recently he'll do one longer one 1-1.5 hours. He has been crying for every single nap. If he cries more than 20 min we get him and try again later.

A 6 month old shouldn't need 4 naps a day, right? But he's so grumpy and showing signs of being tired. I'm at a loss. I would like a routine/schedule for naps because I think that would help him!

PS He is usually doing 2, sometimes 3 wake ups at night if that makes a difference. Bed time is at 730 ish
