Mine didn't sit up on his own at 6 months - he went from flat on his stomach to sitting at nearly 11 months old! (He was fine in a highchair before that). The first time he rolled he was 7 months. He wasn't crawling until 12 months and was walking by 15 months. He is now running around like a boss at 17 months.

Some kids just take longer than others. He was always a big boy both in height and weight so naturally it was a little more difficult for him than for the kids that had to only stem half his weight.

This WHO charts (page 7 of the pdf) shows the ranges in which children reach milestones: http://www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/Windows.pdf

Neither of mine have sat by 6 months. My first sat at 10 months... and started crawling very soon after, then standing, and cruising- each week he added a new skill. His head was and is gigantic (>97%), so I feel like he had to work through that first.

My second is 10 days shy of 6 months, and while he is hitting milestones faster than my first, he still isn't sitting yet by any means.

My DS belly crawled at 6 months, but didn't start sitting unassisted until 9 months, then started real crawling on hands/knees around 10 months. He might surprise you and start crawling first.

DS didn't sit up alone until 8-9 mo. He started pulling forward on his belly around 9 months and didn't properly crawl until 12 months! This time was pretty stressful for me and I was always worried about him not progressing fast enough. We even had a PT eval. But not at 15 months he is right now track and I wish I could have spent those months no worrying soooo much!!

Sounds to me like he is fine and just a late bloomer. Is he strong in others ways? Does he hold his head strong and roll over well? Is he generally strong? I would give him another month or so and see how he does. You can always have him evaluated by EI if you are concerned, it's totally free but at this stage it's so early that he has a lot of time to catch up. Wishing you luck!!!

LO is almost 8 months and I am only starting to feel comfortable with her sitting on her own. She is also not crawling yet and still no teeth. I am not concerned at all. It almost seems like its her personality, like "ill do it when I feel like it mom". Try not to compare!

My daughter didn't sit until 9 months. She crawled at 12 months and didn't walk until 16 months. So, she was on the very slowest end of normal. Now she's three, and she's really strong, fast, and physically adventurous. Most children will just do things on their own time. You'd have months before you actually needed to worry.

I was having similar fears today! My son is 6.5 months old and not sitting very well. He can kinda do the tripod thing briefly but he's much too interested in moving around to actually sit still! He always arches his back and tries to stand instead!

And I agree about @GilmoreGirl about Facebook. I feel like seeing pics of other babies on FB hitting milestones early makes me worry about my son, which is silly so I try not to compare!

My friend's son wasn't sitting fully unsupported even at 7.5 months...and he is now a super wild, fun two year old. At the time though, she worried about it a ton. It's hard not to compare, but try not to worry too much. I find that one Facebook and such, the people who share the most are those whose kids hit early. It's ok for your guy to do things at his own pace.

@ShootingStar: I could have written everything you said!! We've had pretty much the exact same timeline. And I agree- our girls seem to be a couple of steps ahead of the boys.

@Danizaur: I know it's hard, but try not to worry. Babies truly do things on their own time. FWIW, N went from tripod sitting for a few seconds before toppling over to sitting very sturdy within just a couple weeks. And he just started regular crawling at 9.5 months.

I had lots of worries about my LO's gross motor - she never rolled, sat behind schedule (9 months) and didn't crawl ever. She did, however, just start walking at 12 months, so now she seems on track. I used to stare at all the other moving babies at my play group and then at my little lump and feel alarmed, but it was all worries for nothing!

My LO practices gross motor skills for AGES before she actually does them. She almost rolled back to front for like 2 months before she finally managed to flip -- and then she kept flipping like she'd been doing it her whole life. She still doesn't roll front to back (she can do it but hates being on her back so I think she thinks, "why would I want to do that?"). She also rocked on her hands and knees for about two months before she caught onto how to crawl. Then, within a week, she was fast and into everything. For both things, I was starting to get mildly concerned about her not seeming to put things together, but there was just no rushing her! Also, when she went from wobbly sitting to reasonably steady sitting, it happened literally overnight!

Try not to stress. We had similar worries with B when it came to his eating (he wouldn't feed himself). The whole time our guts told us that he was fine, but when we shared our concerns with our inexperienced pediatrician she made it out to be a pretty big deal. We went to OT, EI, and were seeking out neurologists and developmental psychologists. It was a really stressful time for us. Then, one day, he just started feeding himself. He just had other developmental things that he'd rather focus on and feeding wasn't high on his list of priorities. I wish we would've followed our instincts and just let him go at his own pace. It would've saved us so much time, money, and stress!

I wouldn't worry at all - it varies so much from child to child.

My LO wasn't super solidly sitting on her until 7.5 months and wasn't really into crawling until then as well. We knew she could but she didn't do it until one day she just crawled across the room. She didn't take steps until 12 months but didn't really walk a lot until 14 months. She had a friend that was full on walking at 9 months. You just can't compare when they are so young

I wouldnt worry at all! My lo didnt sit unassisted until 6.5 months, crawled at 7.5, was standing from the floor unassisted (not pulling up...just standing in the middle of the floor) by 8.5, and was walking at 9.5!

Not to say your lo needs to progress that quickly, just that kids have their own speed, and that unless you really feel there is an issue, try not to worry.

The more "floor time" he gets where he isnt held or positioned the stronger he will get :) your ped will mention it if he is concerned.

I wouldn't worry just yet. It's funny, I see all the babies in my due date group do everything before D does. Girls also tend to develop faster, which can be hard comparison-wise. I see so many girls the same approximate age doing things that are WAY beyond where DS is. D sat unassisted at 6m, 1w. He didn't crawl until 8m, and that was army crawling. Now at 9.5m he finally has started regular crawling. He was also a little later than everyone else on cruising. Meanwhile girls born a couple weeks ahead of him are taking steps unassisted. Oh well, he'll catch up, and I'm sure your son will too.

It's really hard not to compare with other babies you see, but that sounds pretty normal to me. C was sitting right around the 5 month mark and she was the first of our baby friends the same age, so most of them were closer to 6 months or a little later. And she did it suddenly, like I was mildly worrying/wondering when she would do it, then suddenly, she was sitting. He will do it when he is ready and will probably surprise you.

Meanwhile, C is one of the last 2 babies in our play group to walk, at 13 months, so that's my current thing I keep reminding myself to stop worrying about.

This is hard to post because I truly dont feel like he's behind in the way that there's something wrong with him...but the more I see babies his age sitting unassisted or crawling or almost crawling makes me have a little anxiety in my belly.

T is not sitting. He can support himself in the tripod position for only moments and not always. He can roll to his sides but still hasn't started rolling back to belly yet. I know crawling is a long shot for 6 months, but I know 2 babies his age who are full on crawling and he hasn't even started getting on his knees or anything. He's on his belly and kicks his feet and that's it.

He doesn't like to have tummy time at all. He quickly rolls onto his back. We are persistent but I don't feel like it's enough. DH does "pull ups" with him all the time and we practice sitting. His doctor wants him sitting by his check up on the 22nd and at first I thought that would be no problem but other than establishing a few seconds of tripoding since then, we've had no progress.

He can balance himself well when I hold him upright, just a little shaky. All of his mental development is completely on track, if not ahead.

I don't know what to think. I don't want to be worried, but DH is stressed about him not sitting yet and it's stressing me out!! Seeing other 6 month olds sitting and crawling isn't helping.
What do you bees think?
