We have done Music Together since about 6 months, and my son loves it! Even when he wasn't mobile, he loved watching the other kids, parents/nannies, and the instructor. And he loves playing with (mainly eating. Ha) the instruments.

That's great you can try the class out to see if she likes it!

We did music together around 9-11 months but it was not really worth it because DD would just wander around doing her own thing. She didn't really seem thaaaat interested in doing anything with the class. I stopped for a while and returned in about 9 months and omg what a difference! Then I really felt she could participate enough to make it worth it.

I did a music class with DS from 8-12 months, it was really great and he loved it! The free library one sounds ideal though!

@FaithFertility: I'm hoping my DD will as well!
@Kimberlybee: @mrsrain: I spoke with a program coordinator today and they are letting me do a free trial! I also found out that there is a class for babies under 2 at the library that starts at the end of the month... And it's free! So I will probably do that before I pay for anything!

We attempted a free class at our local library and it was too overwhelming for her. Will they let you try it out before you buy? If not us say wait until LObis old enough to really participate.

I enrolled DD around 7 months and she loved music class! It was more because of the teacher and the teacher's sweet persona. Her voice was beautiful and could soothe the fussiest of babies! We really loved her first music teacher. She took her first steps during music class at 11 months. I have fond memories of that sweet time with DD. The teacher got a full time position at an elementary school so left after DD turned 15 months or so.

@Foodnerd81: I am definitely going to check out the story hours at the southie library! My friend sent me their schedule and I saw that they have one specifically for babies under 2 starting at the end of October! After seeing that, I definitely don't want to pay for Little Grooves! (Yet)
Oh and her nap schedule won't be a problem for us because.... What is a nap schedule? DD is yet to know, ha!

@jlm22: glad they said you can try a free trial class! That's what I was going to suggest. They actually also do a free Little Groove class at the boston children's museum on weds mornings, but it can be really overwhelming because it gets crowded- my 2 year old still gets overwhelmed. I really do like little groove but the free ones get canceled last second way more than I would like!

And 6 months is definitely not too young for library story times! Our bigger problem was fitting them in around naps.

It depends on what you want to get out of the experience.

I was going to suggest you talk with the studio to see if they could accommodate an alternative (free) trial - good business practice - but it sounds like you've got that squared away.

We started a similar class when our LO was about 6 mths. - the "class" was mixed ages up to 5 yrs. (good number of siblings!). The philosophy was social interaction through music and movement. Basic structure, various kid-friendly instruments and props (e.g. scarves, balls). Kids were encouraged to explore the space based on their needs/wants as long as they weren't hurting themselves or others, participation levels varied and there was occasional chaos, as there is wont to be with those under 5!

The first year to year-and-a-half our daughter observed and participated on a limited basis, but we learned that is her personality and at home she would "practice" and sing and dance (CD and book were included, $15/class in the Midwest). By the time we moved this summer she was a typical 2.5 year-old running/climbing, helping pick up instruments, participating. We were sad to have to leave, and I haven't found a comparable program here, but the investment was worth it for her and for us (great family time!). We have opted for gymnastics out here ($20/class, sigh) and I know without our previous experience we wouldn't be enjoying it so much.

I think it's a little young. I took my DD to a couple of free classes when she was around 6.5 months, and although she loved watching the other kids, the musical instruments were beyond her. She will be 8 months tomorrow, and I took her to another free class last week where she enjoyed shaking the maraca, but definitely not $20 worth. I'd say wait it out a few months.

@jlm22: We're in a birth to 4 years class with my 5 month old and my 2 year old that cost the same + a registration and materials fee for the class and I would say no it totally isn't worth it for a 7 month old. It is only debately worth it for a 2 year old. but that said, it's a very serious class and you're not allowed to talk and all the activities are for older children. We actually found one at a community centre for 3 bucks per family that is not serious, so my toddler runs around and plays and I can have the baby out on a mat with toys, and that one I would totally pay 160 for for a 7 month old. So I think it depends on the atmosphere!

@jlm22: That's great! I really think trying it out would be SO helpful in deciding! The gym I went to said that also some classes get more babies and some get older kids, so you can ask about that too for classes you're most likely to go to!

@Anya: I know! The sad thing is, is that $20 seems to be on the lower end of what classes cost around here!
@KayKay: Thanks! A story hour is a good idea. I was thinking she was to young for that, but they have free ones at the library, so maybe I will check it out.
@LulaBee: That's great to hear. I'm hoping for the same experience!
@snowjewelz: That's what I'm worried about. 3 year olds running circles around her :)
@lemong: This program sounds similar... It's called Little Groove Music.

I just spoke with one of the teachers... they said I could try it out for free on Friday and if she likes it, I can sign up. :)

LO2 has been going to music class since he was a few weeks old, tagging along with big sis. He loved it, even when he couldn't do anything. Now we started the fall session for Music Together and he loves it (he's 10 months now). Music Together usually lets you do a trial session - I really like their musical philosophy.

I took DD to a trial class that was mixed age too and found it hard for her to join in b/c a lot of the activities were geared towards older children (getting up, dancing, etc). She had fun, but if I have to spend $ I'd want a more age appropriate class. Can you try to arrange for another time for the free class?

We started DD in music class at 7 months and she's still going strong at age 3- has moved up with the same kids. It's more kindermusic style, so she's not learning to play instruments, there is singing and dancing and parents participate. She still loves going.

My DD (10 months) has been going to Music Together since she was 6 weeks old, tagging along with her older sister. I would say around 6 months, though, she started loving it, and has the cutest little wiggle/shimmy that she does whenever she hears songs she likes now. I would say before 7-8 months, it's maybe hit or miss. Not necessarily a bad thing, but you might hope that you get more out of it than she does :)

That being said, I don't like this teacher nearly as much as our old one. If there are other things like storytimes that are free (but still do some sort of singing), you might feel like that is good enough!

I would say yes! Music lessons have been one of most valuable and rewarding things we've done for DD. There is overwhelming research on the benefits of music education for children. We started at around 10 months and she has been enrolled in music classes ever since. Just this year she started with the children's choir in our city's symphony orchestra.

I'm contemplating signing up for a music class, but I'm not sure if DD is to young (She will be 7 months when the next session starts) The age for the class is 3 months - 4 years. It's $160 for 8 classes. Is it worth it to sign up? We aren't exactly rolling in it, so I don't think I can pay $$ just to meet other moms!
