@sweetiepie I know, Alimentum is nasty! Maybe your ped has some samples you can try for a few days, I think you should know pretty quickly if it makes a difference or not. My son's mspi was too severe for Alimentum - he would have had to be on Neocate if I couldn't bf him. We did try it once though and yuck.

@MrsADS: @bees_knees: Thanks! We’re all formula so I could try to switch to alimentum once this open gentlease is gone. We did alimentum with my older son, basically as a “just in case”. Man do I hate that stuff though. 🤮 I’ll ask the Ped when we see her next Monday.

@SweetiePie: we didn’t medicate at all so I’m no help! Sorry.

I DO remember reading some research saying Zantac in infants isn’t super effective but that since it’s so low risk it is worth a try?

FWIW, my sons have all been MSPI and cutting the milk/soy is what improved their reflux!

Zantac was useless for my son, but he had VERY severe reflux. I think if you don't see improvement within a few days, I would start a PPI. My son was basically on an adult dose of Nexium before we saw any improvement

@bees_knees: @Ajsmommy: coming back to ask what meds (if any) your LOs were on for reflux? We got a prescription for Zantac yesterday but I’m wondering if it will even work.
I actually had awful reflux/GERD in pregnancy that led to horrible pain and a raspy voice and Zantac was a joke. Prilosec is all that worked and I’m wondering if it will be the same case in him.

@mrsbubbletea: Well it’s hard to say for certain. I had PPA so I was convinced he did. So my Ped did put him on Zantac because I pretty much insisted and she said it couldn’t hurt.
The thing is, I knew nothing about infant sleep at the time and I was keeping him awake wayyyy too long. I resolved this and he started Zantac at the same time. So I have no idea if he got calmer and happier because of better sleep habits or Zantac. Or both. Haha.
But yeah, his health records would indicate reflux with Zantac treatment.

Fortunately I don’t have PPA this time and This baby has been on a better sleep schedule from the start so I know that his discomfort/fussiness isn’t from being overtired. So I’m much more confident that it’s reflux after talking to the Ped in the office yesterday. I just can’t decide if I want to press for meds or wait it out a bit.

@mrsbubbletea: Def not a cold, Ped listened to his breathing and chest and she said babies would have a runny nose with a cold, it wouldn’t be congestion alone. No coughing either. We’re pretty confident that it’s silent reflux, which can cause raspy voice and congestion.

And just realized when I say raspy, I don’t mean like rattling/mucousy. I mean it sounds like he’s losing his voice, like after you yell all night at a concert or something.

@SweetiePie: that all sounds like a cold to me, congestion can make them so uncomfortable with the bottle. Feel better little guy!

@bees_knees: @Ajsmommy: So after 2 more days of the raspy voice and a marked difference in how he’s feeding (fussing and crying and pulling off of the bottle, arching, batting) I took him to the ped yesterday. Mostly because we are going away next week and I don’t want to deal with issues while we’re gone. And he’s also very snotty (we’re able to suck a lot out a few times a day) so dh was a little more worried that it was a virus.
Anyway, we didn’t see my regular Ped, but she did say it could potentially be reflux. But since he is still feeding ok (despite it being a pain in the ass) and has great weight gain and wet diapers she isn’t ready to prescribe. I know my normal Ped who I have a long and great relationship will prescribe if I ask (she knows I’m not an alarmist) so I’m going to give it a few days and then call her if it doesn’t improve or worsens.

Thank you to everyone for their feedback!

How’s the pollen where you are? Yesterday my 2 DSs and I all woke up with a raspy voice from seasonal allergies. It’s weird because I’ve never associated this symptom with my allergies before and I haven’t noticed DS1 showing signs of allergies before. Maybe it’s just a particularly bad season. But Dr Google did tell me that pollen can directly inflame vocal cords and cause sore throat and lost voice even without coughing or other symptoms.

@gotkimchi: @cake2017: thanks! I’m not overly worried, my husband was actually more scared. And then he found several resources that said to always call the doc for a raspy/hoarse voice. So, I’m glad I did and we can hopefully rest easily tonight. So far he seems totally fine in his sleep.

Today in the 2nd half of the day me, my husband, and our caregiver all noticed that my 6 week olds voice is raspy. Like when he fusses/whines/whimpers it sounds like he was screaming at a concert all night long. But he doesn’t scream/cry a lot! He’s actually a very chill happy baby who cries minimally for normal things - when hungry, for example.

I’ve seen various things on internet like croup, vocal cord nodules, etc. I called Ped but curious if anyone had this and what cause was.

No fever. He’s a little congested but he’s always had normal newborn congestion (like sounds a little snorty) and I don’t THINK this is any worse. He’s not coughing and breathing sounds fine.
