I believe mine was at 6w1d and we saw the flickering heart. Actually my husband and the tech did. I couldn't see it. And I have good vision! Weird. But we heard it the next week at our next ultrasound.

@septca: I know your point that it really can cause more concern that somethings not there when it should be.

I was a lucky one I think because I went in at 5w4d (after a confirmed rising beta but early due to holidays). I was measuring ahead (I think about 5w6d) and we were able to see/hear a heartbeat via vaginal u/s

I had one early in week 5 and there wasn't a heartbeat yet. I was crazy nervous because of spotting and I had to travel the next week so that's why she did it but it wasn't really worth much. I would wait until 6 weeks so you can see the heartbeat.

@MaryM: Exactly. Plus, my doctor's advice was essentially that if the pregnancy wasn't going to be viable, there was absolutely nothing that she or I could do to stop a miscarriage. That was a bit of tough love, but it made me feel better - it was out of my hands - and made me want to wait until there was really something to see for subsequent pregnancies. (This last time, I had an u/s scheduled for a little after 6 weeks, but I miscarried before that.)

I agree with @septca:

I had my first ultrasound at 6 weeks, but all they saw was the sack. It was one of the worst feelings ever to have to wonder if the pregnancy wasn't viable, or if my math was just wrong.

My docs schedule them for "6-8" weeks...and I think from now on I'll err on the 8 week side (unless other issues are present) so I don't have to go through that worry again.

@QBbride: if you are under an RE's care you will get several early ultrasounds as a matter of practice. Usually you are then released around 8 weeks to an OB.

I saw the heartbeat at my 6 week appointment for both of my pregnancies. Good luck!

In my experience, there is very little value in having an u/s before 6 weeks (that is the earliest most doctors do it). I had an u/s at 5w1d with DD because my beta numbers indicated an ectopic and my doctor wanted to treat it as soon as possible so I didn't lose the tube (I only have one working tube). We saw that the pregnancy was in the uterus, but that was it - all we saw was a sack. No heartbeat, no fetal pole. So while it was nice to know that the pregnancy was not ectopic, it did *nothing* to alleviate my worries about miscarriage. We had to go back at 6w1d to see a heartbeat. In the future, I will just wait until 6 weeks because going twice was a pain, I was super stressed that week because we had not seen a heartbeat, etc.

I've had scans at 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks. There's no HB at week 6, but you can see the pole and a tiny sac. I think the HB is still iffy at 6 weeks, anyways.
