@Adira: we did a mix of chunky/homemade purees that were thick Enough he could sort of pick them up and whole foods. We also would load the spoon and then let him take it. So his first meal was an avocado slice and avocado mash on a spoon he was in control of.

@ALV91711: Yeah, I think I'll try that! Hopefully if I put him in the chair and give him some toys and DON'T try to feed him, he'll become a little more comfortable with it before I offer food to him again!

Maybe once he is feeling better and used to the chair try putting some food on his tray and see what he does. He might like having control over what goes in his mouth.

One day you won't be able to feed him enough.

@ALV91711: That's what I was thinking. I'm going to try just putting him in the high chair while we have dinner tonight and maybe giving him a couple toys to play with while we're eating. Yesterday when I put him in the high chair, he immediately started whimpering, so I think he ALREADY associates it with something bad! Hopefully I can fix that!!!

@Adira: we didn't start solids until almost 7 months. he was showing a few ready signs, reaching for our food, sitting up, etc. by 5 months. our first try at 6 months was okay, but he wouldn't even open his mouth he next few tries, so we waited another month, until his food grabbing got more insistent!

no harm in waiting, there's no magical switch that flips at 6 months that makes a baby ready for food :)

@locavore_mama: I guess I just assumed we should start because he was 6 months and it seemed like every other baby was eating solids by/ around that age.

Thanks ladies! I definitely want solids to be a good experience for Xander and I don't want to pressure him! Hopefully when he's feeling better, we can try it again.

Yeah what everybody else said- break. And I definitely think the cold might be an issue. Also, for when you are ready, when we started, I first had Baby Brother just practice sitting in the high chair with a toy for a few days to get used to the setup while we were eating, so that it's not too much at once.

How we started was just licks and finger dips. I'd have a piece of fruit and let her lick it or dip my finger in a puree and she'd have a bit. Some things she liked and some things she didn't. She also ate better for my husband, she usually wanted to nurse when I was feeding her.

I'd take a break - you want it to be a fun experience, and not for him to associate meal times with crying. If he's under the weather that could be all there is too it. Maybe try again in a few days?

I'd take a break too. We didn't do very much purees and LO was doing a ton of solids by 8 months...he just clearly preferred them over pureed food.

I started with apples, squash, and pears. I read this in my moms on call book and my LO ate it up once he did get used to the purees. From them I followed the 3 day rule. Plus, I'd wait it out until he's feeling better anyhow.

I'd take a break and try again in a few days when he's feeling better. If his nose is stuffed he's probably freaking out that he can't breathe through his mouth.

He will tell you when he's ready. Don't push it, but offer it casually.

My mom's mantra is patient persistence. She's a feeding expert and my own personal baby feeding guru.

I'd take a break. I don't think solids should be a "takes time to adjust" or "keep trying" kind of thing. I think generally kids are ready or they aren't.

I wouldn't keep trying right away . . . does he show any interest in food? I only started solids because LO was reaching for my food at 6.5 months, otherwise, I would have waited. There is no rush to start solids . . . as they say, food before 1 is just for fun.

I change my answer from your other thread. Take a break. We would keep offering when M did her drama fake gag. But if she ever legit cried we stopped immediately. Sounds like Xander just isn't ready.

So... as many of you know, yesterday was Xander's first taste of solids (Sweet Potato puree) and he HATED it. He pouted, whimpered, and clamped his lips shut!

So today was take 2. As soon as I put him in the high chair, he started whimpering, and when I brought the spoon with the sweet potatos near his mouth, he started crying!!! And then it took forever to calm him down! I feel terrible, but now I"m not sure what to do. Do I keep offering? Should we take a break for a week and try again later? Should I try to offer cereal instead? Should I try switching to BLW?

Also, Xander has a cold - cough and congested. Not sure if this would affect how well solids are going down, but I thought I should mention it. Any advice would be appreciated!
