I think some babies are just cat nappers. My first DD was still doing 40 minute catnaps every few hours at 6 months (3 over the course of the day), but once her night sleep evened out around 9 months, her naps settled down and lengthened too). And I haven't done anything differently with this one - she's just a better sleeper.

@winniebee: haha, yeah, sorry I don't have any advice! He naps differently at daycare, but it's all over the place. Yesterday he did two 30 minute naps at daycare and had been up for 5 hours by the time I got there. Fell asleep in the car at 5:00 and napped 40 minutes, then up to eat. Fell asleep nursing and then up again at 8:30 to nurse again and back to sleep.

My LO is a little younger (5.5 m) but she's on mainly two naps. Usually our days look like this:

8:30am up for the day
9:15/30 am first nap
12/12:30am up from first nap
1:30/2pm second nap
3/3:30 pm up from second nap
6:30pm bed

She's generally a really good sleeper though and I guess it helps that she usually only nurses 5 times a day.

At 6.5 months, Xander was around 3 naps a day. Although he definitely still had days of 4 30 minute cat naps!

Logan still cat naps for the most part. His naps are usually only 30 minutes IF we're lucky to get them that long. We do awake time of 2-2.5 hours usually.

@SweetiePie: honestly my older cat napped as well for a long time so I know it's a phase. This one has not been a good napper since 3 mos! I do think baby is overtired right now though perfectly happy. Hopefully a shorter awake time will help!

@winniebee: at 6 months our schedule was like this:

6:30 awake for day
8:00am-10:00am nap
10:00 - 12:00 pm awake
12:00 - 2:00 nap
2:00pm-4:00pm awake
4:00pm -5:00pm nap
5:30pm - 6:30/7pm awake
7pm bedtime

I'm a firm believer that catnaps are the result of being overtired (they were in our case, he wasn't always a great napper!). Pretty much any professional on sleep would say that being overtired results in trouble falling AND staying asleep. I'd start by reducing his first awake time to only 1.5 hours and adjust from there. It might feel weird doing such an early nap (7:30/8) but for us it worked really well and set the tone for the rest of the day.
Also, a strong nap routine helps a lot. Tried to always nap in the crib and did a mini bedtime routine (diaper, sleep sack, sound machine, music, and eventually his lovey).

K is 7 months now, but during the past month she's mostly fallen into a two nap schedule. We also aim for bedtime of 8:00. I know it's not ideal and probably should be earlier, but it's just hard!

I put K to sleep at 7:30 and she's up for the day around 7. Although she does sleep a bit on the 20 min drive to daycare.

Normally she takes a nap there around 9:30, but only around 30 mins. Then she might nap around 12 again no more than 30 mins.

DH picks her up from daycare around 1 and sometimes she'll fall asleep on the drive. Otherwise he'll put her down around 3. Then I wind up holding her for a 10 min or so catnap around 6:30.

Although yesterday she took a 2 hour nap and today she refused to, so there goes any consistency!

Hm maybe he needs a shorter first awake time to set the day right? Otherwise seems like 2/2.5 hrs is the norm. I am fine with 3 hours or so before bed! I just want to get down to 3 naps. Never mind 2 haha!

She's 7 months now but has been on the same, two-nap schedule since 5.5 months.

Awake - 7-7:30
Nap - 8:45/9-10:30
Nap - 1-3:30
Bedtime - 7-7:30

If she didn't nap well earlier in the day, I gave her a catnap from 4:30-5pm.

D is 7 months, but at 6 months I was putting her down for naps after about 2 hours awake, she would usually have 2 short (40 minute) naps with 1 long (1 1/2 - 2 hour) nap in the middle. I was finding somewhere in that 6 month window she started nap fighting though, so I started letting her stay awake for 3 hours. If we are home she will take 2 good naps per day. Both at least an hour, but one can easily go as long as 3 hours. She is high happier in the evening and we are sticking with a 2 1/2 - 3 hour bedtime interval depending on how naps went that day.

And once in a while he will really extend those awake times around the 3rd- 4th naps to 3 or when 4 hours depending on what we are up to! Very hit or miss. And his sleep overnight is pretty consistently 11 hours waking at least 3-4 times to eat (brief wake ups to latch on since we bed share)

It's been changing lately with his awake times increasing and the difficulties of others managing naps and bedtime with me back to work. He's almost 6m. Nap lengths vary, usually about 45-60, sometimes only 30, every other day or so a beautiful long 1.5-2.25 hours! Usually takes 4 naps per day.
On my off days from work:

Wake 7-8
First nap starts 830-930, lasts about 45 min
Second nap starts 1130-1230 sometimes the longest one
Third nap starting around 2-3, usually about 45 min
4th nap around 5-6 for 30-45 min
Bath 730
Bed 8

@winniebee: we are pretty much just like you guys!
Only difference is she wakes for day usually around 7-7:30

Our naps are usually 3 and last 40-45mins
A "normal" day is
7-7:30 wake
9-9:30 1st nap (40-45mins)
2nd Nap usually on the way home from some activity 11:30-12:30 (45mins sometimes an hour if I leave her in carseat)
Last nap 3:30-4 (lasts 40-45mins)
Bed 7:30

Her awake time is about 2 hrs

We were on three naps at that point. I think she got up around 6:30 and went down about 8pm. Naps were around 8-10, 1-3, and 5-6:30. My kid was weird though in that she always had her shortest awake period at the end of the day. She just couldn't do more than an hour before we started bedtime routine until like, 9 months.

What is / was your 6mo schedule? R is 6.5 months goes to bed at 730 and is typically awake by 6/630. But then cat naps all day (unless we are in the car then he takes a monster nap). My older stopped cat napping by 5.5 months so I had him on a better schedule. I try for 2 hours of awake time but sometimes it's more and sometimes it is less. 30/40 min naps all day.
