Woah. I was in advanced Math and Science all through school, and this definitely high school territory - and it was difficult for me as a math-person!

Kind of good that they're pushing kids more, but there is definitely a limit, and if you scare them off too early you're doing some serious damage to their love of school!

UPDATE:

So my nephew’s teacher replied to my sister. Basically she confirmed what @808love: guessed, and it’s that the school is following a Pilot program. I haven’t seen the email and my sis summarized it, but I’m guessing it’s the LEAD program (?) that I saw in the link in the above reply. She said that he is welcome to stay after school for help, and that she feels he is capable of the concepts and that it will better prepare him for high school.
I find this so disheartening and unfair to the 6th graders being exposed to this. Firstly, I really don’t think they’re developmentally capable of grasping such concepts yet! I feel like yes, there are some kids that can – but that’s what Honors and Advanced is for! There’s more I feel about this but I don’t want to turn it into an education war. I’m just bummed for him :( My sister is going to try to gauge other parents’ reactions, but she is having a hard time contacting them.

@thisisme: We're in Massachusetts. My sister looked up the typical curriculum for the Boston school system and it said "weather, Earth Science, etc."

@808love: oh no that made me sick to my stomach. MA is on that list of states. GAHHHHHHHHH why are they doing this to kids? I totally bet his school is doing this.
@Miss Ariel: OMG freshman chemistry in college?! This is ridiculous!
@mrs. 64: good idea on the standardized test questions
@Corduroy: oh goodness- that is wacky!
@StbHisMrs: thank you!

I will ask my sixth grader when he gets up. He's advanced but I don't recall hearing or seeing anything like that.

* He's up and they're currently studying the solar system. He's attending a Charter school now, when he was in private school they studied the solar system in 3rd grade...

That is applied algebra and not something I would expect to see until high school. Poor kid.

I went to a school with wacky methods as a kid. Some teacher advised our parents to put us all in algebra at the local community college the summer after 6th grade. We were not ready for it at all. It totally turned me and most of my friends off math. I can understand why your son is frustrated.

I can also understand why the teacher would try to introduce the calculations. The calculations are really easy - if you understand algebra. Hopefully she can find another way to channel her enthusiasm.

I teach elementary school, but the school should be able to give your sister a copy of the standards that are being taught in the class or tell her where to find them online. Also if your state administers a standardized test in this subject/grade level, then it is likely that you can find released test questions on the state website for comparison purposes.

I'm neither a parent nor a primary or secondary level teacher, but it looks like you'd need some understanding of algebra/pre-algebra to be able to solve those, and we definitely didn't learn any of that in my public school curriculum until at least 8th grade for advanced math classes, 9th grade for normal math levels.

I'm not a 6th grade science teacher, nor do I have a 6th grader. But I do have a degree in Chemistry and tutored Freshmen level Chemistry throughout college and grad school. And while it is taught in high school, it also is taught again in freshmen level chemistry classes, and they sometimes have a hard time with it.

These sound like it could fit with Next Generation Science Standards. There is a huge jump in rigor lately, especially when you hit the middle school grades. Grade 6-8 is banded together as middle school curriculum. Check out this link for standards:
http://www.nextgenscience.org/search-performance-expectations

I teach 4th grade but this is where I would look first if I were researching science curriculum. What I know for sure is that math curriculum in 4th grade is what I learned in 7th grade and most kids are capable. As for that science test you posted, it looks super hard based on my own personal ability.

ETA: NextGen hasn't been adopted fully by states (so it's more on paper than in practice) but some states are considered LEAD states so they may be teaching more with this. When you ask your teacher, you'll discover more. Since the teacher is new, he/she could possibly not know what the students are realistically capable of yet and/or how to adapt.
Here is a map of states that may be more involved, but it will also depend on the teacher/school/district. http://www.nextgenscience.org/lead-state-partners

These problems all require a decent level of algebraic understanding. That's why these types of problems are done in high school chemistry. What state are you in? I second the suggestion from@Mrs. Lion to look up you state standards (or common core depending on where you are. They should be on your states dept of Ed website.

This seems like stuff I was personally doing as a high school sophomore in science classes. I sincerely hope they aren't trying to make poor 6th graders do this, let kids be kids! In 6th grade I remember dissecting an animal, doing cell stuff, learning about making babies/birth, but not that stuff.

This seems like high school level to me. I think it's a bit much for a regular 6th grade class. I don't teach or have a 6th grader but I've been exposed to science curriculum.

So my nephew always loved science- it was his favorite subject in school. This year (6th grade) he hates it - he is so discouraged and I think it might be an overambitious teacher? This is her first year teaching science after resigning from a different profession. **I get that just because it's her first year doesn't mean she doesn't know what she's doing.** So please I hope nobody takes offense to this :) BUT I can't help but feel that this class is her "guinea pig". He is in a normal curriculum. Not Advanced. Not Honors. Just plain Science class. My sister looked up the typical curriculum and it's nowhere near what he is coming home with. She googled some of the questions and 10th grade curriculums showed up for most of the questions.

If you have a child in the 6th grade, or teach science in the 6th grade - is this in line with what you see?
I'm going to copy/paste the latest homework.

18.	You are now wearing scuba gear and swimming under water at a depth of 66.0 ft. You are breathing air at 3.00 atm and your lung volume is 10.0 L. Your scuba gauge indicates that your air supply is low, so, to conserve air, you make a terrible and fatal mistake: you hold your breath while you surface. What happens to your lungs? Why?
Your lungs expand (pressure and volume are inversely proportional). As the pressure decreases, the volume of your lungs increases.
