My LO wasn't really interested in solids till a week after she turned 1!

We "fed" her three meals a day, but she just wasn't interested and didn't eat much.

And then at 1, a switch flipped and she started devouring everything in sight. She's still a good eater now at 22 months.

I'm feel a little better after reading your responses. At day care, the babies who are the same age as DD seem to be eating TONS of solids, and my DD barely eats the 2 containers I pack her.

I would agree not to worry for now either (tho my DD is not on solids yet so easy for me to say..). But honestly I just keep chanting to myself that food before 1 is mostly for fun, since she is still getting most of her nutrition from milk I'd just let her figure it out!

i think interest in solids can wax and wane at this point, and totally normal for babies not to show interest at all. any solids she's eating right now is more for practice and fun--the primary nutrition still comes from breastmilk and/or formula. not sure what your ped was talking about with 3 solid meals--i think it's much more loosey goosey at this point, and again, it's for fun/practice.

My son was not really interesting in solids until 9 months, when he suddenly was eating a ton of solids. That also coincided with introducing finger food, but I think that was just a coincidence. My pediatrician wanted DS on three meals a day by 9 months, but he just meant to offer solids three times a day, and it did not matter if he actually ate them until a year. Until a year LO was getting breast milk every three hours, which was six times a day.

@Pumpkin Pie: He basically stared us down and made grunting noises. At this point, he had no teeth so I wondered if he could handle it. I gave him some and we basically have not looked back. He is so excited about real food. Granted some days he picks, but I trust he can pace himself. He is about to turn one. When big brother was that age, I still carried baby food when we were out just in case. With DS2, I know he will eat anything anywhere.

Babies can show different interests at different times. Many things can influence it too like teething. My 1st son went the very traditional route - purées, then chunky purées, then finger foods, and then very gradually decreased his bottles. DS2 has not followed the same path. We started with purées but he grew disinterested rather quickly. He wanted real food. He wants what we eat. So since he was about 8 months or so he eats exactly what we eat in small bite size pieces. I feed him with a spoon and he turns his head or bats the spoon when he's had enough. Some days its a lot and some days not so much. He also did this with no teeth. Those gums can chew food really well!

I would say keep offering. Try not to stress. It will happen.

Don't be too worried is the first thing I'll say!

Solids take longer to digest so you may need to adjust her feeding schedule. As soon as we started solids, my son went went from 30-ish ounces day to 24-25 (so he dropped an entire bottle), and started needing 4-4.5 hours between feeds. We do solids 3x a day, immediately following his first 3 bottles, and then 1 bedtime bottle. (Bottles are at 730, 12, 430, 730pm. Meals are at around 15-30 minutes after the first 3 bottles, or however long it takes him to drink). I do 6oz bottles before solids and a 7oz bottle at bedtime. I choose to do it this way so that I'm not having to feed him every hour of the day.

We started with purees by spoon, and then giving him small bites of soft food by hand into his mouth. Small bites of banana, baked sweet potato, avocado, ripe mango, etc. He liked the bites of food better than the purees but he couldn't feed himself yet. We introduced puffs by hand around 6 months and he started enjoying the taste/feel of them. Around 7 months I just threw a few on his tray every meal time to see what he did with them. At first nothing, then I started putting them in his hand for him, and then he started trying to put them in his mouth and mostly dropping them.

My son just started getting used to pincering around 7.5 months and now can feed himself puffs very well (he turns 8 months the day after tomorrow). In the last week he also wants to hold things in his hands and feed himself like broccoli spears or watermelon sticks or toast. Most of it ends up on the floor, but whatever.

I still feed him purees but he needs finger foods to distract him because he's not really food motivated. So I get one of those sectioned kid plates from the dollar bin at Target and make a snack plate every night and slip it into a gallon sized ziploc bag. Then I toss him a few bites of something off the plate throughout the day to play with/eat while I spoon feed him. Today's plate has black olive slices (soaked in water overnight to pull out the salt), watermelon sticks, golden delicious apple sticks (since its a softer apple), penne pasta, a bell pepper strip, a corn wheel (corn on the cob sliced 1/2 inch thick), and a silver dollar pancake. Plus puffs and yogurt melts.

Feeding a baby seems to be a challenge for me. You'd think it should be one of the easier things - feed when the baby is hungry. I have a couple of questions.

I've started her on solids, but she has been slow to take it. She started off eating the fruits and veggies I gave her 2x/day, but now she doesn't want to eat solids at all. Should I be worried, or do some babies just not like solids until they are much older? Any advice on what I should do? I tend to get anxious when the feedings don't go smoothly.

I've been feeding her every 3 hours since she was born, That's 5 bottles/day, and now offering solids 2-3x/day. I feel like I'm feeding her every 1-1.5 hours. Is that how it is, or should I be doing something different? I feel like all I do when I am home with her is try to feed her whenever she is awake.

Are there any foods I need to avoid other than honey, nuts? I'm trying to introduce a variety to her (even though she isn't eating it).

We are doing purees, but I try to leave chunks of food on her tray to see if she will put it in her mouth. She puts everything else in her mouth except food! Again, do I just keep trying, and wait for her to eventually get it?

My ped said she should be eating 3 meals (solids), but right now, she hasn't wanted anything since Friday.

Sorry for the long post. I just want her to be healthy, and make sure I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing.
