I found some very firm NOs and a quick cessation of nursing to get the message across pretty well, even at that age. No way was I going to put up with that!

My son went through a phase like this too. He got his first two teeth and it got so bad that I was bleeding, got clogged ducts, etc. Torture! I do wonder if a lot of it was teething related because he seemed to teeth for a long time before they actually emerged! I have a rubbery, colorful teething necklace that helps. Sometimes I put a burp cloth or blanket in his hands to distract the scratching and pinching, but he usually throws it down after a few minutes. We do a lot of gentle touching with the dog, both LOs, stuff around the house. So when he starts up the abuse I look at him firmly and tell him we don't use our hands to hurt other people. Then we touch mama gently (he uses one finger for that because he likes pointing, but we also try to touch open handed softly). If it continues, he's done nursing and gets put on the floor. He's 10.5 mo the now but I started this several months ago. It seems like he doesn't know/care what I'm saying but I'm hoping it sinks in someday, haha.

We're in the same boat with our 7 month old. While side lying he likes to push against me with his legs so his head bounces up and down - with the nipple still in there. Last week I think he was chewing it. I didn't notice any sudden sharp pain like with a bite, but after a while it would start to hurt and I noticed he was clamping funny. My chest is covered with little red marks from all the pinching and scratching, it looks like I have a weird rash.

That said - so far scarves seem to be the most helpful. It's just a shame I discovered this as its finally starting to get warm and I don't need them. LO especially likes the ones I have that have little tassels. And he doesn't seem to accidentally hurt me as much as when he's playing with necklaces... I've tried taking away the nipple and stopping nursing sessions briefly when he does something that hurts - but I don't think it's been very effective :(

My 6 month old is pretty down to business when nursing. But any other time she loves to grab at and pull every part of me. My hair is in a tight bun but she still gets her little hands on the back under the bun and rips hair out. And she kind of strangles my neck with hugs... She's surprisinly strong!

Anyone have suggestions how to help her learn to be gentle while still so young?

I have an infinity scarf I bought to wear at home just for this purpose - some of her energy can be redirected to holding onto it while nursing. I also will hold her little hand and try and keep her nails trimmed! Wish I had an answer to the nipple stretching though, I'm just dreading that first tooth!

Yep! Wearing a nursing necklace helped to give him something to play with. But otherwise I just need to be aware of where those hands are going!

Oh my goodness yes! I only nursed my first until 5 months but I'm at 8 months with my second and oh my goodness, she likes to pinch and pull my body every which direction and also enjoys biting down every now and again with her sharp little teeth. I've been trying to distract her by singing or giving her things to touch but it's still a work in progress so I wholeheartedly commiserate!

We aren't nursing, but I'm having the same issues with my 6 month old (obviously sans nipple trauma). Scratching, hair pulling, sticking his fingers in my eyes/mouth/nose, lunging backwards off my lap. Someone suggested handing him a lovey...going to try that.

I guess the title says it all.

My son has become Babyzilla during nursing sessions. He is wreaking havoc on the town folk (i.e. my body). He pulls my hair, pinches my nipples, plays "let's-see-how-far-I-can-stretch-my-head-back-with-nipple-in-mouth," and scratches me all over with his murderous talons. Is this normal? Am I alone in my torture? Does it get better? Thank God Babyzilla doesn't have teeth yet!
