I found solids really picked up around 9 months. She gained a ton of weight with the introduction of solids and by a year she went from 10th percentile to 40th. She loves her food. At that age we did a ton of fruit, steamed veggies pieces of soft meat. Lots of stews and soups with a chunky puree. We added homo milk in around 11 months and it took a while but she now LOVES it.

@2PeasinaPod: feeding can be so hard! My 10 month old DS is so different than my older DD. He loves to feed himself and does really well with tortellini, beans (from a can and rinsed off, warmed up if I have time), corn, and cut up fruits. That might help him get more excited about solids if he can feed himself!

@2PeasinaPod: I was a but worried when we first started solids, because she was doing some gagging and still nurses so often. But she seems to really enjoy eating, likes slmost all foods, and stopped gagging for the most part after a while. I also think she's just a snacker, and she'd want a lot of bottles if she was on formula, just as she nurses a lot now.

@LindsayLou: Your LO doesn't sound too off from mine! Ok, maybe I'm rushing things. It's a struggle to spoon feed him anything, and his brother gagged so much that I was afraid to feed him anything too solid, but maybe I'll give it a go. I also need to ask his pediatrician about eggs. LO1 is allergic to eggs, so I'm afraid to give LO2 eggs in fear that he'll also be allergic to them. I have to try them sometime though...

You guys are all awesome. Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Definitely some high calorie foods- whole milk yogurt maybe with sun butter stirred in, avocado, tortellini, etc. Also maybe some soft finger foods/ puffs? Trying having LO snack a little before taking a bottle. My DD would never eat if she had milk first.

I'm hoping my daughter will get more into food soon. She is smaller and doesn't drink a lot of breastmilk or eat really any solids. Hates puree and wants to feed herself. They do sell high fat yoghurts you can mix in with stuff. I have mixed a 10% fat one with apple sauce and sometimes she will eat a few spoonfuls. Also, the highest fat cottage cheese mixed with some pureed fruit is a good filler. Regular oatmeal ground up and boiled with whole milk and some raisins or prunes would also be a good filler.

@Ms.Badger: I didn't think of crumbling goldfish up into hummus. My 7 month old likes hummus, but I didn't know how to give it to her except feeding it to her off a cracker.

My daughter is almost 9 months. This is what her meals for the day roughly look like:
7 am- nurse
8:30 am- breakfast, fruit, sometimes toast, yogurt, or egg whites
9:30 am- nurse
10 am- snack, fruit, sometimes yogurt or puffs
11:30 am- nurse
1 pm- lunch, all finger food (carrots, broccoli, green beans, banana, avocado, tortellini, black beans, yams, rice, spaghetti, cheese, strawberries, zucchini, watermelon, etc)
3 pm-nurse, and snack, fruit, maybe yogurt or freeze dried fruit and veggies
5 pm- nurse
6 pm- dinner, all finger foods, whatever we're having cut into pieces if she can have it
8 pm- nurse to sleep

She won't tolerate purées anymore, and yogurt is about the only thing she's ok with us spoon feeding her. She's on the small side as well, so I try to give her lots of options to choose from.

I would say try feeding a lot of different things and different ways of feeding. LO was ok with purees but he really took to eating solids when we could feed them to himself. He LOVES purees that he sucks himself right out of the pouch and all the different finger foods. Now he's really loving feeding himself with a spoon so we do a lot of mushy stuff held together will starchy stuff ie yogurt with granola or hummus with crushed up goldfish etc

Hmm... a lot of solids that are ok for young babies aren't that calorie dense compared to milk, so maybe focus on things with protein or carbs? At that age we'd introduced chicken, fish, and bread with a minimum of additives. I think DD was eating yogurt with cereal too. She did have a lot of trouble with solids because she wanted to feed herself and that limited what we could give her. It's better now at ten months, she still doesn't like purees but will eat them at least once a day.

@edelweiss: This is exactly what we do. Solids are cereal mixed with a puree and sometimes we do chunks of things. LO1 was gagging on chunks until he was after 1, so this is a whole new ballgame for me!

@MrsSRS: Thank you...I didn't even think to do solids first then follow up with a bottle. That will for sure get him to drink less from a bottle and eat more solids. I think transitioning to this method will eventually get him to drop a bottle or two over the next 4 months.

FWIW, my LO2 just wasn't super into solids until 9 months. I was getting worried and frustrated and then it was like a switch flipped. So maybe just wait a bit longer. Or, some of the solids are when LO might not be hungry yet. You could just offer solids every 3 hours or so and then follow it up with a bottle immediately. So every feed is a solids, bottle combo but they are spaced out better. Theoretically LO will slowly up solids and the bottles will get smaller and smaller.

what kind of solids are you giving him? that schedule sounds similar to what LO2 was on. he's 10 months now and for solids, i mix oatmeal cereal, 4 oz puree, and a few TBS of plain yogurt. we also let him do finger food, but he doesn't take much in from that.

Looking for some help because LO2 is SO different from LO1, and he's not following any of the normal eating patterns. What/how do you feed your 8+ month old?

LO2 is in the 5th percentile for height and weight. He's a tiny little dude. At 6 months, he dropped to second percentile, but had him in for a sick visit recently, and he's back up to 5th. Because he's so tiny, the doctor wants us to keep feeding him based on our current schedule, and we introduced solids at the same time. He is at 36 ounces/day not counting what we mix with his solids, and the pediatrician isn't concerned since he's so small. His schedule looks like this right now:

7am - 7 oz.
8:30am - breakfast (solids)
10am - 7 oz.
12pm - lunch (solids)
1pm - 7 oz.
4pm - 7 oz
6:30pm - dinner (solids)
8:30pm - 8 oz

He drinks his bottles like a champ, but his solids aren't great. I'm trying to figure out how to get him to take less from his bottle and more solid food in order to wean him shortly after he turns 1. He's also a formula baby. We breastfed until I went back to work at 4.5 months. Please, no judgement. That ship has sailed.

Any advice?
