Have you tried eggs? LO likes them scrambled with olive oil & cheese. I cook them pretty hard so she can pick them up, but you could do a really soft scramble and spoon feed them.

Ask your pedi if more calories in her formula would be ok he should have a recipe for mixing at different calories. The normal way to mix you are getting 19 0r 20 Calories a ounce. It can be mixed 22 -34 calories an ounce. Also with asking your pedi. you can add oil to to the formula to up the calories. If the baby is having difficulty with certain textures you may request a swallow study. FYI I am a RN specializing in pediatrics and NICU. You may want to thicken her baby food with the oatmeal and she may be able to swallow and tolerate it better if she has low tone or a swallowing issue . I would follow the advice of the Pedi but does not hurt to suggest some things to him and see what advises to do.

My son had trouble with thin liquids and was also small and a very low volume eater. Regular formul is 20 cals an ounce, so we mixed it to equal 24 an ounce (per doc orders). I would stick with just as much cal milk as you can for now because solids take longer for kids with feeding issues. I bought a lot of pouches and made sure they were the highest cal options. I would add baby cereal to thicken any purée I made for cals. You can also add olive oil.... We also had to feed more often than typical because he tired easily and we did a dream feed for a long time just so he got one extra bottle...

Most babies with dairy allergies have soy issues. I'd try a dairy and soy free formula to see if it makes a difference. I'd then try avocado or banana. They're high fat, high nutrient. They feel good on the belly.

I had severe eating issues (undiagnosed allergies) and I became scared to eat because food hurt. By introducing lots of foods in a low stakes way, you might find a winner. For me, it was broccoli and peaches. But my mom tried about 20 different things before I grabbed a broccoli stalk and ate it. This was before blw was a thing. Maybe try blw in addition to purees may help?

Last suggestion, I take 1/3 cup oats, 4 oz of formula, 1/2 banana, and 6 sliced blueberries and make oatmeal. LO loves it. It is super sweet, but nutrient packed.

Another vote for giving nutramigen a try. Some mspi babies seem ok, but then really chow down when they're offered a dairy and soy free option.

And both of my girls have been late on solids...i think it's common with MSPI. My oldest didn't really food till after a year; my second is getting slightly into food now at 11 months.

@Mrs. Turtle: the fact that she's on soy formula points to a dairy issue, so I would be very careful about offering other forms of dairy. Both of my girls have dairy and soy intolerance (they often occur together), so soy fornula wouldn't have helped much. Their esting issues are as you describe though--not wanting to eat, not finishing bottles.

I was breastfeeding, so I cut all dairy and soy. In your case, you might have to explore Alimentum, Nutragimen, or elemental formulas like Neocate or Elecare. After I cut dairy and soy from my diet, my girls would eat mote but only while totally asleep. So i put them to sleep with a paci, then switched the paci for a bottle after they were asleep.

My LOs will eat coconut oil. Straight from a spoon. And it can be mixed into any puree since it liquids at 70 something degrees.
Also, sometimes, only under pediatricians orders, they increase the concentration of formula to make it higher calories per ounce. This can mess with hydration and digestion if not done properly, but maybe ask about it?

@Mrs. Pickle: I tried tiny banana pieces this morning. She had a hard time with the chunk I gave her. I think I need to think of her as a new to solids 6 month old and basically just try to get as much formula as possible into her.

@Mrs. Turtle: I wonder if she would like finger foods? You could break things off into tiny pieces and feed them to her by hand. Also my DD loves mashed banana in her oatmeal.

@Kemma: Good ideas. I'll find out why she's in soy formula and then week definitely try cheese if I can!

@ShootingStar: You know, I thought about ice cream yesterday. I could even mix it with healthier foods to get her to try them...I'll look into the dairy thing.

Ok this is a little off the wall, but if she's ok with dairy you could try ice cream. Lots of fat and calories, feels great in the summer. When my DS was a 7 months he developed a huge aversion to food due to some terrible tasting medicine we had to give him. We tried all sorts of foods and he kept refusing. Ice cream finally got him to eat.

Would she eat grated cheese? Cheese is quite calorific and most kids like it, or could you had cream or coconut oil to food, where appropriate? Full fat yoghurt, maybe?

@DesertDreams88: She's on Enfamil soy. I'm sure there's a reason, I just haven't uncovered it in all the paperwork yet. We are using a thickener too.
Avocado is a good idea. I'll try that this weekend. So far I've gotten her to take some bites of banana and pear puree, so I'm thinking she likes the sweeter foods. She eats oatmeal baby cereal in her nighttime bottle. I'll try it at breakfast with a spoon too. I'm lucky she's been in care for about a month already so I'm not starting from scratch. She's been gaining and just made it back onto the growth chart this week. I just want to make sure that isn't negatively affected by her move to our house.

I hope / imagine the dr has prescribed a high calorie formula??

Avocado puree seems good, for all the fat... if she warms up to purees. Yogurt too (as of 9 months, I think?)

When my friend fostered a severely malnourished 4mo old, they basically had to feed her like a newborn - at least every 2 hours. I don't know the amount of oz.

As you all know I can't give (and don't have) much background. So we're going hypothetical here. 8.5 month old, severe failure to thrive, also other health issues. Currently much improved, gaining reasonably well but doc says still needs to keep gaining a lot.

I'm looking for suggestions for feeding a not so great eater. She isn't that into bottles, will (slowly) finish 2-3 oz at a time and then want a break. Hard to finish nighttime bottle before she falls asleep. Started on solids (purees) but really not that interested. Trouble with thin liquids but seems to swallow slightly thickened formula fine.

I'm concerned that I'm just not getting enough calories into her. Any brilliant suggestions other than basically offering a bottle all the time?
