My MSPI little man could only do the amino acid formulas (neocate). I went away for work and we switched cold turkey. He took to it like he had been starving. Like 9 oz at a time. He was 9 months old. I came home and he wouldn't drink another sip.

@HappyBaker: I also agree that sometimes straight up works better than mixing. Good luck!

@Kbee: FWIW my MSPI baby and the three I nannied before I was a mom all did well on Nutramigen liquid concentrate or RTF. They also all would only drink it quite, quite warm. We tried to then wean them down on the temperature because it isn't actually supposed to be heated.

@MrsB2012: No my cycle hasn't returned, although I'm really hoping that is what's going on right now. It's been about a week, and no sign of AF yet, so I'm losing hope!

@MsHangry: I think this will have to be our plan, start with mixing a little bit in for now. I'm also a little worried we'll have to try different kinds if he doesn't tolerate what we try first (RTF vs. powder, or one brand vs another), so we better get started soon. Good luck with transitioning your baby, this is hard stuff!

@T.H.O.U.: Thanks! We'll probably start this in the next day or two.

I also have an MSPI baby I'm trying to wean over to formula. He is 5mo and I need him to take a bottle first....

The Ped GI and LC that I spoke with suggested the slow mixing of formula with breastmilk over several days.

I have no idea about the formula, but have you had your cycle back yet? The sudden drop in supply could mean your cycle is coming. I found that at least :) ( just incase you're stressed about your supply, could just be that. ) I always notice a big drop then it comes right back up after.

@Kbee: I would get some now and maybe slowly do a mix to get used to the flavor. Start with 25% formula and 75% breast milk.

We started at 3 months so I don't have any advice on the older baby aspect - but one thing I read that I thought was a good idea, was if they refuse it when you mix it with breast milk, just try giving it to them straight up. If you think about it, breast milk with a weird tasting formula mixed in it probably tastes like bad breast milk, whereas just formula alone tastes like an entirely different thing.

We used a different formula (Elecare), and introduced it around 7 months. My daughter would only take it if it was really warm, and in the beginning we had to mix it with breastmilk, gradually increasing the ratio of formula to breastmilk until she would take a full bottle of formula. I admit, it was a struggle, but after a few weeks she took it no problem. Good luck!

If you've had experience with starting an older baby on Nutramigen or Alimentum, did it go well? I've heard that older babies have a particularly hard time with these formulas and refuse to drink them.

My DS is 8 months old, has been EBF thus far, and is MSPI. I had a sudden supply drop pretty much overnight last Friday/Saturday. I'm not sure why my supply has dropped, and I've added in some additional pumping sessions to get it back up, but no luck thus far. We've had to use up some of my freezer stash to supplement what I'm not making for his daycare bottles.

I'm going out of town for work for 4 days/3 nights in a few weeks, and since we're using up some of my MSPI-safe freezer stash now, I know for sure we won't have enough to cover the time I'm gone. It seems like we're going to have to supplement with formula, I suppose Nutramigen or Alimentum. Based on what I've heard, I'm assuming he might not like it and might even refuse it. So needless to say I'm very worried about what is going to happen in the next few weeks!
