Yeah we are militant about daily start time and bedtime. We give or take 15 minutes but until they are toddlers and on 1 nap there's no flex in it. We get up at 730am every day and if my son woke up early we just did not go get him until at least 7am to reinforce that it was nighttime.

The baby might be protesting to the change in sleep environments but if she's always been napping in the crib I don't see why it would be a problem. I would just make it dark and quiet and bust the white noise and just be like its nap time. And then be super happy and cheerful when nap time is over.

The reason I would be hardcore is because sleeps gets wonky again around 9-10 months so I'd want to try and instill some consistency now to get you through that patch. Around 11 months my son needed to have his morning nap shortened - he'd go down fine but wouldn't sleep for the afternoon nap so I had to wake him from the morning nap after an hour and he was so pissed off but I couldn't get him to nap later otherwise.

@gingerbebe: yeah I think CIO, and extinction. But she cried for an hour this morning. She's roughly on a 2-3-4 schedule, but I also try to keep the naps closer to 9 and 1:30, depending on wake times (like if she wakes up early I stretch the morning wake time to get nap closer to 9). This doesn't always work though. And I have to accept that the kiss of death for morning nap is when she sleeps late. Which is brutal of course because I want to sleep! Even when I wait two hours from a 7:30 am wake up nap is a nightmare.

One further complication/ question- she sleeps at night and afternoon nap in a pack and play in our room, but usually morning nap is in the crib in big sisters room. Do you think it's better to only do all sleeping in the pack and play? This is less convenient for me but I'll deal. We move in a few weeks and I'm sure everything will change again anyway.

I'm team CIO in this situation. If her personality is amenable to it, you can do checks and just talk to her from the door that it's time to sleep and leave, but my kid got hysterical so we had to do extinction. We do the same routine for naps and bedtime minus bath and we've stuck to it for our new baby too.

What do her current wake times look like? At that age my son was up about 2.5 hours before his naps and then 3 hours before bed.

I'm at the end of my rope with naps and getting my almost 8 month old to sleep.

She usually goes to sleep on her own at night- probably 4-5 nights a week I nurse, then put on the sleep sack and sound machine, rock her for a few minutes and put her in the pack and play, and she rolls around for a bit and goes to sleep. The other nights she cries and gets worked up and DH or I end up rocking her to sleep. She usually wakes up once at night to nurse.

Naps are driving me up the wall. Some days she will nurse, then I bounce her to sleep and it takes like 5-10 minutes, transfers to the pnp no problem. Some days she won't fall asleep or wakes up in transfer and it's like an hour long battle and I want to tear my hair out. So I've tried putting her down like I do at night and it does. Not. Work. This morning she cried for almost an hour. I have a 3 year old at home and can't ignore her for an hour while I do this battle. The crying it making me an anxious mess.

So how do I get her to nap on her own? I know I need tone consistent but I don't know what to consistently do! Current situation is not working.
