I use a consistent bedtime. LO's naps have generally been haphazard, but bedtime was always the same. Well, I have changed it over time, but not on a day-to-day basis.

@Zbug: I can only tell you what's worked for us...and for the most part it's worked really well! The 2-3-4 schedule would not have worked for us because my LO needed a longer wake time before his first nap and a shorter wake time before bed. He was a great night sleeper so the consolidated sleep at night meant he needed more stimulating time in the morning to get a good nap. His afternoon nap was always short (45-60 minutes) so he needed less time before bed. We always based bedtime on the last nap until just before he turned 2.

@mdf106: @illumina: @Sammyfab: thanks, guys! Have been aiming for a 2-3-4 schedule but maybe should try 3-3-3 instead. It's also hard to know whether to aim for a consistent bedtime or base it on last nap - especially when naps are currently a bit haphazard.

I agree with @illumina. She probably wasn't tired enough to sleep longer. Sleepy cues are less reliable after 4-5 months. Maybe try putting her down 15-20 minutes later than normal if she continues to wake up after 1 sleep cycle. Baby sleep is constantly changing and little adjustments here and there make a huge difference!

@Zbug: yes, wonder week over here too, exact same behaviour! It's tiring but getting out or having company over really helps! As for the naps, my LO is similar in that she often yawns a bit half an hour or so after waking, but we stick to the 3-3-3 ish schedule.

I had a similar change happen at a similar age. Moving the first nap later helped. He had been going down a little over an hour after waking up, and I changed it to three hours. The morning nap had been creeping down to less than an hour, and returned to 1.5-2 hours.

She's also just acting a bit different. One minute she's fine playing on her mat while I clean up. The next I have to be holding her / even sitting with her on the mat isn't good enough. Also she will go from happy to fussing to laughing to yelling from one minute to the next. She's never really acted like this before. Teething? Wonder week? Maybe both of us are going crazy?

@illumina: that's something to think abt. Today was weird. She woke up at 7 but started showing sleepy cues an hour later. I quickly tried to get her down, but she wasn't having it. I assumed she wasn't really tired and tried again at 9 (her usual nap time). She alternated playing and fussing for an hour before I gave up and took her on an ergo walk. She transferred to bed fine but was up 25 min later. Maybe I should try holding off till 3 hours despite sleepy cues. She rubs her eyes a lot but otherwise acts fine.

How long after wake up do you put her down for her 1st nap? It could be that she's not tired enough to sleep longer and you could try putting her down 30mins later?

My LO is 8.5mths and she needs 3hrs at least of awake time before nap 1.

@Smurfette: oh jeez. That happens?!? She's always been a sleep fighter but this is worse than normal. She's actually not 8 mo for a few more days though. She's only been up 45 min and is already rubbing her eyes again!!

After six months of catnaps, DD finally started taking a good morning nap of 1.5-2 hours every morning. The last few days, however, she's been waking up after about 40 minutes. She wakes up happy but then needs to go down for another nap earlier. It's totally messing up our nap schedule. Has anyone had this happen? Are we back to three naps a day? Help!
