My DH and I would often take turns sleeping in the guest room and letting the other parent stay in the room. this gave us both a chance to get caught up on sleep and feel better. We ended up moving DS to his own room around 3 months. I originally wanted to move him at 6 months but the peditrician suggested sooner so that all 3 of us would sleep better. We sleep in the guest room next to his bedroom so I still hear him when he gets really loud or the monitor picks him up.

4 weeks here...we just couldn't take the grunting anymore. We were getting no sleep and he was on the total opposite side of the room as us!

@skipper2010: I wait until she cries. She fusses in her sleep without waking up, which is another reason we moved her. I kept the monitor on and now I generally don't wake up until she cries. At 7 weeks I'm ok with her crying for one minute until I get in there.

@MamaMoose: I heard the same theory about the breathing in sync. But I wasn't sure how that works if you have white noise blaring- I can't hear anyone breathing over that anyway.

We did it at 4 weeks because she was so noisy! She'd even cry in her sleep. It was awful. We're probably horrible parents but we don't use a monitor either. Her room is so close to ours, and DH is a crazy light sleeper, so we always hear her.

To answer your other question, when she was that little I went in when she cried, but if she was just fussing I'd leave her for a minute or so to see if she was just sleep fussing.

@LazyLightning: Hahaha my LO is like that too. "Um mom, I'll tell YOU when I'm ready to eat thank you very much". Now at day care when she decides it's time to eat she crawls over to the fridge and BANGS on it.

Another theory I've heard about the SIDS prevention is that if baby is close to mama baby will breath in rhythm along with mama and therefore not stop breathing.

We wanted to wait until 6 months as well but eventually gave in at 4 months because none of us were sleeping. The pediatrician was the one who told me to move her and it made SUCH a difference for all of us.

We moved LO when she was about 12 weeks old for the same reason and I can tell you, sleep improved for all of us drastically. When she was in the room with us, I would respond to every single tiny sound and I would try and swoop in and get her to nurse so that she wouldn't wake my husband.

To your question about responding to a cry: generally I wait it out 2 or 3 minutes to see whether it's really a cry for help or just a noisy sleep transition. Often, she would/will just go back to sleep immediately.

@skipper2010: oh and I always waited until she cried, but I think mine is an unpopular method. Thing is, my child would not EAT until she fussed. She still won't. I can know she's hungry, and see that she's showing signs, but if I stick a bottle in her mouth she won't eat it. Then 5 minutes later she'll scream like she's starving and gobble down 4 oz.

@LazyLightning: I've "heard" different theories for the reasoning behind sleeping in the same room as LO and SIDS prevention. One of them being, like you said, being able to keep a closer eye on them. But another theory I guess is that they don't get into a really deep sleep when sleeping close to mom and dad which could be another risk factor. I would love to continue sleeping in the same room as DS, but then I wouldn't be sleeping at all. lol By the way that picture you posted is ADORABLE!

@lemondrop: @blackbird: @Foodnerd81: @T.H.O.U.: Thank you! It's good to know DS isn't the only noisy little sleeper around. I think you've given me the courage to try transitioning him into his nursery tonight.

One more question for those of you with noisy sleepers...do you wait for them to cry to respond or do you go get them if they continue being loud for a while? I'm just afraid him crying will be a late sign that he needs me.

6 weeks for this reason. She would wake me up all night with her grunts, although Dh slept through. And Dh woke the baby a couple of times moving around. I nearly killed him. We all sleep better. She is in the rock and play in her room right now bc she might have reflux but she has also slept in the crib.

I did a google and it looks like it's mainly for infants in distress. I guess if you don't have a good audio and/or video monitor for your baby, or if they would get caught in their swaddle or stuck in a position where they can't breathe, you may not hear them struggle if they aren't in your room.

I actually had no idea of the recommendation of sleeping in the same room till 6 months. I wonder why where they sleep affects them as far as SIDS? I guess if you laid awake all night and watched your kid to make sure they were still breathing...

Either way, we moved her to her room at 7 weeks. This was mainly an exercise of laziness because we had just gotten home from MIL's with the pack n play which is where she normally would sleep in our room - and we didn't feel like setting it back up so we just put her in her room in her crib. Everyone slept SO MUCH BETTER. She was a loud sleeper and a light sleeper (so any time we made any kind of noise, like if we rolled over or shifted in bed or coughed), she'd wake up. It was awful and stressful to have her in our room.

1 month, he was so loud we kicked him out to his own room. At that point we all slept better since we didn't wake him up either. There were still plenty of night wakeups, but we had better in between stretches.

I'm sleep deprived and need help! My 8 week old sleeps in the same room as DH and I in a bassinet. He initially has a nice quiet 3-4 hour stretch when we put him down for the night, then it's all downhill from there. We thought he was waking up every 1-2 hours to be fed/changed, but he never cried he just made constant grunting noises and would be thrashing about. Last night I kept a light on dim so I could monitor him better and he appeared to be asleep the whole time he was making those noises. So I decided to let him be instead of waking him up by changing his diaper and taking him out of the bassinet. Problem is, DH and I are NOT sleeping because he is SO noisy! I know the Academy of Pediatrics recommends sleeping in the same room as baby until 6 months of age for sids prevention, but I think the only way for DH and I to get any sleep is to put him in his nursery and keep the monitor on. I'm really nervous about doing this and it makes me sad to think of him all alone in a big crib when he's still so little. I don't know what to do and am looking for opinions. How old was your LO when you transitioned to crib?
